Meet Doug Wolff | Business Owner – Batter and Beans

We had the good fortune of connecting with Doug Wolff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Doug, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In 2022 I walked away from a 22 year career in public education. At that point I didn’t have a plan. I had been dabbling in real estate investing for a few years and figured I would pursue investing as a full time endeavor. In the next few years I realized that while owning a business was challenging, and the paychecks weren’t as consistent, the potential for income went well beyond the ceiling of income as a public educator.
Fast forward to April of 2025. Our family moved from Washington State to Texas in 2024 so our 16 year old daughter could receive training in Ballet. Once again I didn’t really have a plan for employment. My wife and I always thought owning a coffee shop would be fun. So, after floundering around for almost a year, we moved forward with purchasing Batter and Beans.

What should our readers know about your business?
Batter and Beans is a quaint cafe featuring custom, made to order, cake donuts, and premium coffee drinks. There are three things that set us apart from other donut and coffee shops. The first is our welcoming hospitality. The mission of Batter and Beans is to “Be a Blessing”. We take our mission seriously by greeting each customer verbally and with a smile, working to know our customers personally, and providing products that bless the customer. The second is our mini cake donuts. We utilize a vanilla cake base for all of our donuts and then customize the donut toppings on the spot while customers watch. We have over 30 “creations” to choose from. Our most popular creations include Oreo Supreme, Maple Bacon, and Cinnamon Roll. We rotate certain creations in for different seasons and occasions. The third is our coffee and drink menu. Since we are from Washington State originally, we take great pride in our coffee from Dillanos Roasters in Sumner, WA. Our espresson is smooth and buttery. Our drip is bold and chocolaty. We have a full menu of lattes, frappuccinos, and non coffee beverages like fruit smoothies. We are always looking to expand our drink selections and are open to customer input and suggestions.
Batter and Beans has been operating since January of 2024. However, we recently assumed ownership in April of 2025. The last five months have been a whirlwind of learning the restaurant business! Neither Heather or I had any experience operating a restaurant. Learning the business has meant long hours, several mistakes, and some slower than anticipated business days. I have always believed that hard work and perseverance is the way to overcome challenges, so, we’ve kept at it through mistakes and slow times.
For the world to know: Batter and Beans means that customers will be blessed by hospitality, creative cake donuts, and delicious coffee. We are a family owned and operated business which means customers are served by us directly. Our story is one of determination, creativity, and risk taking.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are actually new to Texas and even more new to the Fort Worth area. We lived in Plano for about 10 months and only moved to the Fort Worth area this May. So, we’d be open to hearing from our customers regarding the things to do and see in Fort Worth.
I will say that our neighboring restaurant, Cafe Bella, is heavily attended and highly recommended by many of our customers. We are also quite fond of Railhead Smokehouse in Aledo

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I am a believer in Jesus. God ulimately grants me grace, favor, support, encouragement, and so much more. Without faith I would not have ventured into the crazy world of owning a restaraunt.
My wife Heather deserves a shout out as well. She has allowed me the freedom to pursue dreams even when it meant losing the security of full time employment. She encourages me daily. She does not allow me to give up when I feel like giving up. I can’t imagine walking through this journey without her. I am a blessed man.
My three daughters are also my biggest cheerleaders. They often believe in me when I do not believe in myself. Each of them is willing to pitch in and help whenever possible. I hope to be an example for them that is worthy of the title of “dad”.
