We had the good fortune of connecting with Doug Frerich and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Doug, what do you attribute your success to?
I would have to say family. My family has always supported me in my career decision 100%, even when things weren’t going well which as we know they always don’t. There are speed bumps in life, but when your family is there to help you through them is the most import thing. Sunbrero has been in the works for several years and my family are the main backers in getting the product to market and believed in my product.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was always a creative person in the arts. I started oil painting way back in middle school and this lead me to going to college to get a degree in Graphic Design. I worked in a small advertising firm which lead to doing pre-press work in printing companies. This then lead to learning to run printing press and eventually to becoming a National Program Manager with a fortune 500 company in printing where I was over a team that traveled the country training new customers on their presses. So I had been in the printing industry for around 30 years. Do to economic fall out I was laid off a few years ago, So I took the opportunity to get my real estate license. The real estate business is hard to break into when you are brand new. So as I am still learning the ropes Sunbrero had been in works for a couple of years. This also gave me the opportunity to concentrate on getting it up and ready to bring to market and pre-sales which is were we are today. What I have learned along the way and especially during this process of bring my product to market is “patience”. Things just don’t happen over night. You have to work hard and have the patience for your hard work to pay off. To me live is about friends and family. I know its seems a little silly that a umbrella for me represent friends and family. Let me take a minute to explain, take my mother for example. We were all in the pool having a good time and my mother who is 80, because of her medications can’t be in the sun to long so for most of the day she had to stay up on the patio instead of enjoying the pool with the rest of us. With Sunbrero that is made to be in the pool to provide shade, she would be able to join us in the pool while still being in the shade. Sunbrero even though made to go in the pool you can take it with you easily any where, the beach, lake, camping or even a sporting events. So in short Sunbrero provides shade where ever you want to go enabling those friends and family that can’t be out in the sun to join in the fun.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is plenty to do in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Some of the places we could go for sure in Fort Worth is the Stock Yards and make sure we go at the right time to see the long horn cattle “stampede” which really is them just walking down the street. and the Water Garden are must as well. Then we would go into Arlington to tour the Dallas Cowboy stadium and of course the theme park Six Flags over Texas. Next, we would move on into Dallas where there are several things we would be checking out. Klyde Warren Park, Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden where you can see literally tens of thousands of flowers in the park, The Dallas Aquarium and the top of Reunion Tower to just name a view.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes, I believe my dad is one that deserves a big shoot out. He was a hard worker and instilled in us a good work ethic. He was a brick mason his whole life owning his own business, it was a small business of only around 5-6 employees. But builders around town knew his quality of work and respected him so it didn’t matter that he only had one crew. They knew he would get the work done on time and with the quality they wanted. Unfortunately, he passed away before he could see my idea for a new product, but I know he would be my number one cheerleader. Also, my partners and mentors IdeaPros are also the big reason we are at this stage. Being brand knew to bringing a new product to the market I had no idea where to start or even how. They are the ones that did all the work up to this spot in the process, the designers, the engineers, finding the manufactures and negotiating prices. I am not sure this would be a reality if it wasn’t for their mentorship and expertise of how to bring an idea from a simple drawing to reality. Finally, but certainly not least we had a few friends; Gary, Cheryl and Brad who saw a need for this product and investors as well.
