We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Ransom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominique, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
I definitely would say that the average person outside of my industry does not understand how our income works. Most tattoo shops nowadays work off a percentage which is usually 60/40 the artist takes home 60% of the earnings for the day and gives the shop 40% for the room or spot they are tattooing out of! So when I’m charging you $500 for your tattoo in reality I’m only walking away with $300. It sucks but this is the way the industry is unless you worked in a private studio or worked in a tattoo shop that provided booth rent then you would have a set rate that you would pay a month just like hairstylist and nail artist do !
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would say my art in my tattoo style is very distinctive to my own or I feel like a lot of people can tell when I’ve done something! I love details and I love anything with a bunch of line work so if you throw those together I am 100% gonna be down to knock out some beautiful art !! Ive came over many challenges in the Tattoo world being a woman of color and also just being a woman I have different obstacles and things I’m just gonna have to run into and climb over as long as I do this and that’s totally OK it makes me a stronger person underneath it all!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly I just really love Dallas as a whole I work in the Oaklawn district so I’m really comfortable over there, and I just love the vibes and all the love! But every other sector of Dallas is amazing. I’ve definitely enjoyed some wonderful nights in deep Ellum as well of the knox / Henderson And lower Greenville area !
