We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Maxwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dominique, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My work life balance has changed tremendously. My mother instilled a strong work ethic so I was used to working 10-14hr days at a full job just to finish all of my tasks. Now as a part-time entrepreneur I have to manage my time closer than I used too. I work my 8-hr shift at my full time and then I leave work AT work. I wrap things up and immediately go into my pre-scheduled sessions and consults. I have to manage my social media account on IG with time management instead of entertainment purposes. I like to wake up everyday and write down my schedule with tasks from both my full time and part time jobs. I have to set goals and actually pick different times of the day in order to accomplish them. I have made sacrifices with my personal time on the weekends with brainstorming, new recipes, new content, or performing the different services my business has to offer. At first, the time adjustments were overwhelming but after making a few changes I am able to really enjoy my craft as well as enjoy some well deserved naps.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Currently I meal prep, accountability coach, and virtually personal train. I think the fact that I have dealt with my own weight loss struggles over the years creates an emotional bond that I share with all of my clients. Five years ago I weighed over 190lbs which is the heaviest I’ve ever been. I am able to teach my clients the knowledge I’ve learned from my Masters as well as my personal experience.

I think as a trainer it is not only important to teach your clients how to perform exercises properly, how to lean, how to bulk, or how to maintain your weight, but how to properly change your eating habits. I focus more on nutrition with my clients because I want them to keep the weight off for the rest of their life and not the rest of the year.

It was easy to get back into fitness after a break because I truly love helping people reach their weight-loss goals. Transitioning my passion into a part time small business was difficult. I have learned so much about myself maintaining my business through experience, trial and error, research, and customer feedback.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is time management. Once I created my LLC, I became the owner, customer service representative, marketing representative, trainer, coach, meal prepper, social media manager, content creator, and customer retention representative. There are so many tasks to complete in a day that you need to make a schedule and pre-plan your month before hand.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother, Veda Maxwell is my hero, my support system, my prayer circle, and my best friend. Growing up my mother made constant sacrifices as a single mother that I didn’t understand until I got older. Those sacrifices meant being in the best schools and being around kids that didn’t looked like me, getting what she thought was the best education, learning about life skills and survival, supporting me when I decided to join the military at 18, and supporting my move to Dallas alone as a grad student and some dreams. When I was younger people used to call me “lil Veda” and I used to hate it because I wanted to be my own person. Now, at 35, I pray that I can attempt to fill her shoes one day. So DMaxEffect LLC, is for her.
