Meet Dom Smith | Writer & Serial Investor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dom Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dom, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose creativity because it allowed me to be free from the captivity of group think. I realize I could accomplish anything I choose to chase and yes I know that sounds extremely cliché but the truth of the matter is that your mindset shapes your day-to-day life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started Free My Dream (FMD) entertainment company in college after receiving an invitation to join an artistic organization and granted the opportunity to produce a stage production. Without any knowledge I dove right in with the project and produce my first show that myself and others believed would hardly attract anyone but we were wrong and to our surprise we welcomed a large audience and the rest is history. I continued to produce more stage productions allowing my friends the opportunity to show off their talent in front of family and friends. I was able to learn the business not only on stage but behind stage as well ; to date, “Free My Dream” has produced over a dozen stage productions and films captivating audiences all over the country earning me several recognition awards such as Hill Harper: Young, Black, & Gifted and Dallas Native Most Creative Filmmaker. The biggest lessons I have learned is to take action in spite of fear, take action with no support, and take action when the odds are stacked against you. People have a hard time with change but I refuse to be one of those people, I rather spark change and leave a trail behind for others to follow.
Free My Dream, LLC was created to inform all people, that it is not good to maintain the imprisonment of their dream; instead we want to encourage people to birth life into that dream for the world to experience. Also, to create an experience of enjoyment, learning, and discovery. Respect and fair opportunity are the very core of our mission, with a focus on the development of creativity and ideas from individuals to promote unique artistic elements, and to nurture and encourage the diverse creativity in arts, and lastly educate the audience.
That entire statement stem from many years of feeling trapped and consumed by circumstances that I believed I could not change. I have suffered from ignorance, debt, and homelessness because of my mindset until I discovered self-education is the best investment anyone can make.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love my city for its popularity and adventure. Dallas is constantly growing and I am constantly finding new things to do here but I must say the most fun I have is visiting Klyde Warren park downtown Dallas. Their are many food trucks to try new food and entertainment from music to city sponsored events but more importantly its the perfect hang out for relaxation and conversation.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my success to three very important individuals in my life, Alexandria Warfield, Dilynn Smith, and Churetta Barnes. I am a self-starter and motivating myself comes easy these days, however, there are moments when I need support and that’s when I check-in with my circle. Through thick and thin I have been able to rely on them to lift me up, keep me focus, and allow me to navigate authentically down this unknown territory of entrepreneurship. I am thankful to be surrounded by individuals who believe in me and no matter the circumstances they are willing to ride it out. I appreciate their love and I thank God every single day for them.
