We had the good fortune of connecting with Doctor Real and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Doctor, what are you inspired by?
I am inspired by perseverance. I have endured much tragedy in my lifetime. I have danced with the Grim Reaper several times and have been blessed to be the lead. I have learned that when you have reached rock bottom, that “rock” has turned into a foundation to be built upon. I have dealt with depression and learned how to quiet the “dark narrator” that speaks so loudly at times it is deafening. I had to teach myself how to talk to and respect myself. I want to use my life lessons to help motivate people to remove their negative self-talk. Teach them to embrace every 24 hours, and if you made it, you’ve been given a chance to be better. I want my platform to help other people overcome poor decisions or mistakes. Inspire change. Make a difference. Spread love. Exercise perseverance!!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I choose the moniker “Doctor Real” as a play on Doctor Phil. I am going to give it to you straight, no chaser, respectfully. One of the things that I am proud of is having the ability to help people all over the world. A kind word or gesture can brighten the day of many people. The origin story of Dr. Real starts in 2010. I was heading for divorce; life was in shambles. I survived flipping my car several times on January 9th,2010. One day, in my sad dad’s one-bedroom apartment, I broke down and asked God to make me into the man He created me to be. The next day I was inspired to post my first quote on Facebook, “A want must be present in order for a need to be established.” I am here to inspire people to embrace the scars life gives them. Look at them and remember, they are only reminders that you have been healed. The hardest thing is when the people around you fail to provide support. I want to take a moment to thank the people who share my thoughts, reels, and jokes (I’m not serious all the time!!). We have connected through words, and I thank you for sharing it with others. My biggest lesson is that consistency is everything, and respect, loyalty, and honor equal love. Missing any one of the three and love fails to exist. I want the world to know my mission is to put a smile on their face, so why not yours?
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My great-grandmother, Martha “Bit-Bit” Kelson. Her nickname was Bit-Bit because she was only 4″11 but had the strength of Samson. The courage of David. The wisdom of Solomon. She stood 10 feet tall to me. Her love, sage advice, and realness made me have a thirst for knowledge, speak my mind, embrace sarcasm, and love life even you it fails to love you. The way she spoke is the reason I write quotes. With her leadership, her patience, and her tutelage, she is a fountain of knowledge and wisdom. I always wanted to make her proud. She is a huge part of my motivation to bear my scars so others can heal.
