We had the good fortune of connecting with D’Marcus McDowell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi D’Marcus, why did you pursue a creative career?
I want to live a life of expression and creation. Growing up, I’ve always loved art. Whether it was drawing, painting, or making something out of nothing, I love that art gave me the opportunity to create and then later to express. I always feel that in life we always express what it is we like/don’t like and the things that we need/ don’t need and with art, it visually expands it 10x more and everyone can either relate or react to it. Why not do that as a career? I’m not really focused on everyone else opinion on my art but with reaction comes impaction and I want to make an impact on either someone or to a group and more with what I create. It gives a sense of purpose
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to call this current title in my life ” The Journey I’m Framing”. What I mean by that phrase, I mean that with the career that I’m in and currently wanting to improve in, I am putting in the working and shaping out what I want my future to look like, thus putting it all in frame. I feel like what definitely sets me apart from others is how much I care from start to finish. I always care about my art and how it is portrayed because it is a representation of me and what I can do. What I always want people to see in my art is that I’m someone who has a vision, someone who knows what they’re creating and can execute with any means, and someone who loves everything about it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, where do I begin? I love hanging out at bishop arts and going to my favorite shops. Shoutout to Spinster Records, Marcel Market, GoEasyShop, Craft Boba, Urban Owl, and the bookshop. Those are my favorites and definitely some good spots to be in. I’ve recently went to a place called Cidercade and it is SO FUN! you can play any games from back then to now all while drinking cider, it’s the best! Lastly, I like to spend some time with friends out in Lower Greenville and get some Pizza and some Gelato. I’m recently discovering that place and I love to explore more about it.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s so many people I want to thank. First and foremost, I want to thank my parents for encouraging me to venture into art and find what makes me happy. Without their support, I wouldn’t be able to write how much I thank them in this interview. Secondly, to the friends I’ve made along the way and friends I look up to that are currently the battery in my back to keep going and get better an better. And lastly, to my love Sam. She is the reason I enjoy life a bit more and her support and love energizes me more than anything and encourages me to be the best artist and the best person to her cause I know she sees the best for me and in me and I see the same.
