Meet DK RoLLA | Rapper/Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with DK RoLLA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DK RoLLA, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Don’t be afraid to take risk. Also invest in yourself. Nobody will invest in your dream if you are not willing to invest first. I guess I’m saying have a budget. A budget is key. This is the Rap Business more than Hip Hop at this point. Starting off you may have to pay for a feature, a beat, an interview, a video and promotion. The good thing is you start to learn all facets of the business. If you need money don’t be afraid to get a job and work to a goal. If you are in the streets I stress have a end goal cuz the streets love nobody and show no mercy. At the end of the day have a plan. A Short Term Plan and a Long Term Plan/Goal. That fixed figure will keep you motivated. If things are moving slow don’t be afraid to do things yourself. When I didn’t have money for a studio I built my own. I taught myself how to mix and master by reading books, taking courses and YouTube university. At this point annnnnything you want to do in life you can learn on YouTube lol. What I’m saying is learn another trade. I shot my own videos, did my own promotion, started my own label T$C, LLC, which led to my own Merch/Clothing line at dkrolla67.com. All these things have helped further my career which I had to push solely. Along the way if your are serious people will help and join your journey and that’s how you can assemble a team. A team is always crucial. You never see nobody be truly successful solo, but in the beginning it may just be you. Also don’t be afraid to help other people reach their goal. You help another person it may benefit you down the line. If not the experience and info you learn can help you further your situation. Like I said before don’t be afraid to take risk, hop in there and get to it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think I’m giving people an honest depiction of a normal, hard working rapper. with style that reflects with the brand T$C, True Story Curriculum, we try to push that as well. I always try to speak on where my life is now. I work, take care of my daughter, try to stay close to God, and make music that I love. I’m not in the street, not sellin dope, not glorifying steppin, tryin to be honest with these relationships, try to be positive yet honest with women, and basically tell people where a grown up with grown up issues is at this point. I think the biggest obstacle is coming out of Dallas Metroplex and tellin fans about a small suburb south of Dallas, Cedar Hill. You tell people you’re a Rapper from Cedar Hill it immediately tunes them out without even checking out the music. The best thing that’s ever happened for that issue is streaming. Now, I can just send somebody a link and they hear the music first, then all the WHERE U FROM?!?! Questions come lol. I get a lot of respect though once the music is heard because people can relate to where I’m coming from. My biggest advice to new artist is just be true to yourself, and always strive to elevate your music. Oh, and don’t be afraid to venture out of Dallas.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Right now we are close to the fair starting so I’d definitely take them there. All the fried food you can eat lol. We would hit the staples if they wanted Rudy’s, Fuel City, thennnn I would take them to El Si Hay which is truly the best street taco spot in my opinion. But I’d also go to Shops of Legacy/Legacy West for a different vibe. Then maybe Texas Live if the Cowboys are playing. Uptown of course, but basically whatever mood a person is in we have in Dallas and the Metro. There are so many pockets with diverse people it’s really no end to what you can do out here. We have the African American Museum of Dallas at Fair Park which I suggest anybody from any race to check out. That’s an experience in its self. We have the Dallas Aquarium if your into that. If you have kids take them to the Ross Perot Museum of Nature and Science. We have a gigantic Inside Water Park in Grand Prairie called Epic Waters. The kids will never want to leave man. Of course we got the staples Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor but we also have multiple Hawaiian Falls located in several different cities. That’s mainly if your trying to get your family parent time on lol. If you tell me man Im trying to hit some grown after hours functions We got XTC, KOD, Dallas Gentlemen’s and Onyx. Again, it just depends on what you want to do.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
