We had the good fortune of connecting with Dianys Yánez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dianys, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Since I was a kid I love drawing. I would get in trouble all the time in school for drawing during class and selling my drawings to my classmates and charging them to do presentations and maps for geography, but back in Venezuela you are told that art is not a job or a career and it should stay a hobby. When I came to the states everything was different, I saw so many people living off their art I got the courage to take it further and make it a career to pursue.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Everything started in quarantine when I painted ashtrays and recycled baby food jars from my baby to turn them into stash jars. At the same time, I began to try out again painting on canvas and posting them In social media to get my name out there. People started to love my art and get custom portraits from me so that makes me realize I can live off what I love. I love music and is a very big part of everything I do so I thought I could use my art to connect with music artists so I started making rappers portraits that I listen to daily. That gave me a lot more exposure and help me get invited to art show in Dallas where I could expose my painting to a bigger audience. Since I was living in a small town (Tyler, Tx ) the consistent clients weren’t there so I would have to drive 1 and a half hours to Dallas to get my art out there sometimes getting rides back and forth because of not having transportation. I missed so many opportunities because of that but thank God this year I moved to the area.
I’m a very passionate and versatile artist. You can bring me an idea and will make that happen. I specialize in Latin and black culture and music. I also combine my artistic sense to be my own creative director in my photoshoots. I’m not a regular painter and I believe all form of art is connected so I love working with other entrepreneurs like nail techs, makeup artists, barbers, videographers, photographers, host events, hairstylists, etc
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I’m new to the area so I wouldn’t know too many places yet. I have only been at Deep Ellum and Creators Don’t Die which is my favorite spot at the moment
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this to my mother Hilda. She always encourages me to pursue my dream and do what I love no matter what is it as long as I do it good and to the fullest with God by my side. And to Ambi Coles Inc for always supporting my modeling career
