We had the good fortune of connecting with Diamond Franklin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diamond, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I believe the most important lesson that starting this small business has taught me, is if it is something you are genuinely not passionate about it will seem like a chore to do. Staying motivated to continue when you lack support of those close to you, financial stability, and get into creative ruts will take a toll on your drive. Despite the hardships, my photography is an extension of me and it is something that I genuinely enjoy doing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I took an interest in photography while doing an art project of fashion photographer, Irving Penn in college. I was actually encouraged by my art teacher to pursue an avenue in photography. I took a class, and fell in love instantly. Learning the ins and outs of a camera and manipulating lighting was probably the hardest lessons I had to learn. After time and practice I began to get the hang of it. I watched videos, joined photography groups, read books, and took online classes to better my craft. I believe what sets my photography apart is that my main objective is to photograph people of color in a soft tone rather than whats protrayed in the media. I don’t believe that there are a lot of photographers that cater to softening the image of people with darker skin tones. Also I aim to create a space that allows me to showcase diversity. That we do not fit into one category.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spots in the city are all located downtown, Deep Ellum being number one. There are many things to do from concerts, bars, to good eats. I also love to go next door to Oak Lawn on the strip where everyone is a good time. If I’m looking for something a bit more nature inspired White Rock lake, and the Arboretum is always the move. They are tranquil and quiet places to gather your thoughts, and meditate.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to recognize my friends, and family who continuously support me. I appreciate the creative advice, technical support, production set up, financial donations, and trusting my creative vision. Thank you for trusting the vision, and continuing to motivate me.
