We had the good fortune of connecting with Dewane Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dewane, why did you pursue a creative career?
I come from a very blue collar background, so college wasn’t a serious consideration, let alone art. However, through a series of fortunate events, I found myself in college (first in my family), and in an art class taught by a sculptor named Mac Hornecker who had a very similar background to mine. An immediate bond was forged through that familiarity, and I never looked back.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My early career as an artist found me working primarily in wood, but within the past ten years or so I have transitioned into working with fabricated steel because I enjoy the challenge of it as well is its structural integrity. It’s easy to go big in steel. However, even through the transition in materials, my work continues to be motivated by language and specifically poetry and song lyrics.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Dallas Farmers Market. Deep Ellum.
The Nasher, DMA, and all of the great galleries in the Dallas area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ruth Michaud, high school lit teacher and supporter of the odd ones. Mac Hornecker, Jay Schmidt, and Hal Schlotzhaur, three of the most real artist/people I’ve ever met.
Alexis, Edie and Frankie, my very supportive family.
Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance. A manual to a creative life.
