We had the good fortune of connecting with Destiny Capps and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Destiny, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success has been building relationships. I see people as more than just potential customers – I want to get to know them, whenever possible. Building strong relationships with customers and colleagues has been the reason my small business has grown. I try to connect with customers through hand written thank you notes, responding to comments they leave on my social media and email, as well as, start up conversations so I can get to know them through direct messages.
This business isn’t just about money for me…it’s about connection. The great thing about authentic connection is that is tends to go beyond a sale and into loyalty and even promotion of my brand. I get so excited when my customers become repeat customers and I am so grateful to have the best customers out there!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It’s no secret that there are a ton of other playdough kit makers on the market. When I started my business I recall feeling like I needed to be authentic. I looked at what else what out there and tried to be as unique as I could, however, the container I was using was limiting my ability to be creative. Everyone, and I mean everyone, was using the same kit containers. It just so happened that the container I was using went out of stock INDEFINITELY. Cue tears! I wasn’t prepared for that, so my husband and I brainstormed and came up with the boxed kit idea.
Once we had the box, the magic started happening! I was able to create a “party in a box” style of kit that truly set my business apart. From the beginning, I wanted to sell affordable kits, so I spend hours upon end searching for the perfect sensory items that are both high quality and also affordable. My husband always laughs because I tend to select items for a specific kit that add up to around the same amount without even knowing it.
I am very lucky to have very supportive family and friends. They help promote my business every chance they get. My friend Jena Roach, is an Instagram influencer, and out of the kindness of her heart she shared my business on her page. This really kickstarted my outside of family and friends customer growth. I will always be grateful for her. From there, I built relationships with customers and they shared my business.
I’ve also teamed up with an incredible engagement group formed by my friend Kelsey Brown (she’s a Speech Language Pathologist). The group has helped me learn the ends and outs of social media and helped me connect with other people who fit within my intended audience pool. Word of mouth is incredibly powerful and has been a key to my business success.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in San Antonio, TX, so we’d definitely explore the Riverwalk. We would eat at Mi Tierra (delicious Mexican food) and explore the market area as well as the Riverwalk area. Maybe even do the river boat tour.
Living in this area, we are so close to the hill country and it is beautiful. I’d take my friend to New Braunfels and Gruene to have some yummy lunch at The Gristmill. We may even float the river while she’s here!
I’d highly recommend shopping at La Cantera Mall. It’s an outdoor mall and offers a ton of shopping options.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a huge shoutout to my Aunt Joy, my Mom and my husband for encouraging me to start this business! I used to make sensory kits just for fun and they gave me the idea to make it a business. I wouldn’t be here writing this if it weren’t for them.
My husband is truly the yin to my yang in this business. He listens to all my ideas and frustrations without ever complaining. He does all my financials, as well as, helps me do certain business tasks. He has even taken on bedtime with our three kiddos so I can have work time. I couldn’t do it all with it him!
