We had the good fortune of connecting with Destani Mize and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Destani, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
That if you have the determination and dedication, you can really do anything you put your mind to, as cliche as it sounds. If you are willing to put in the hours and ride the rollercoaster, you will succeed.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At Barking Mad, we pride ourselves on our quality of care and being able to enrich the lives of dogs. We are very much a quality over quantity business and are as transparent as they come. I started my business on a whim of literal hopes and dreams and by the grace of God and hard work, we made it. It was not easy, every challenge I faced I hit head on because what else are you going to do? Just quit? I poured literally all I had into starting my business and quitting was quite literally, not an option. I got innovative, I ran specials, even when I couldn’t afford to. I knew if I could get people in my door that they would stay. I’ve become great friends with many of my clients and I live by the rule of if you take care of people, they will take care of you.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well hell, you know we would have to hit up The Spice Rack in Old Town Burleson, my stomping grounds! Stockyards is always a good time and a cool experience especially if they are not from Texas.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Wow. Where do I start? My husband, Clint, for always supporting my ideas, as crazy as they are sometimes. He is the man behind the scenes in everything I do, from being my personal cheerleader to being Mr Fix It when something inevitably breaks up at the facility or even doing the complete build outs on them. He also deserves an award for keeping me grounded when things are going crazy. That is not an easy task.
My grandparents Beverly & Johnny for always believing in me and always seeing my potential. As a child I was always bringing random animals and dogs home, very rarely were we turned away when I came in the house dragging them behind me. They saw my true passion at a very young age and made sure to embrace it (most of the time, haha!)
My best friend of many years, Heather. Bet you’re surprised to read this huh? She has always been the one to adjust my crown when it gets a little crooked and when I feel defeated or lose a little hope, she is the first to remind me of what I have accomplished and what I am capable of. She is worth her weight in gold. Thank you for everything.
MY STAFF, gosh, my staff. They are all an extension of me. I worked alone, all day, just me, by myself for days and hours on end for a long time convinced I could never find some ONE, much less many, that could perform to my standards. Then here they came one by one. like sponges and as much as I have taught them over the years, they have taught me many things too. Girls, I adore every single one of you. Thank you for your dedication and hard work and always making sure we all have the BEST time!
