We had the good fortune of connecting with Deshun King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deshun, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I honestly feel this creative and artistic career chose me. I’ve always felt a passion for hair and the beauty industry. I grew up going to the salon with my mother and grandmother, at the early age of nine I was styling my grandmother’s hair my mother’s hair and several cousins hair. It’s alway been something that came naturally to me. Growing up in my time it wasn’t popular to be a male hairstylist so I tried to hide it, but my talent couldn’t be hidden.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have a salon here in Irving Styledbydeshun. I specialize in hair extensions and natural hair care. I also have my own line of luxury hair extension that can be purchased online at styledbydeshun.com. I’m mostly proud of taking a risk and betting on me. I’ve been in Dallas for 3 years now and have successfully started a hair extensions online shop and gained a respectable client base. I’m excited about growth of my business and client base as I’m still accepting new clients. I set out on this journey 9 years ago when I made the leap and quit my 9-5 to pursue my passion in this beauty industry. It definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride. I opened my first salon in Memphis Tennessee with only the knowledge from cosmetology school. I basically jumping head first and just went for it. The first couple years I faced a lot of trial and error which pushed me to problem solve to keep my business going. When COVID happened I was forced to close down my salon and I had to redirect. So I started a online wig shop to Make and sell wigs during that time. I also used that time to search and review different human hair vendors to find what I now sell today. Once the Covid era slowly ended I had to make a decision on what was next. So I packed up all my things and headed to Dallas where everything seem to fall in place. I found a great location to restart my hair business. I’ve learned to trust my instincts and to stay consistent. I love to bring out the beauty in others and what better way then to give them a great hairstyle and a listing ear. I also enjoy the confidence boost it gives my clients and the extra peep in their step as the walk out.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my friends out to eat every day. I love nice ambience and live music. One of my favorite steakhouses is Perry’s so we would definitely go there for dinner. I also love a Sunday brunch at Sorrie Coffee Bar in Trinity grove. It’s brunch accompanied with live entertainment. I love to sing also we would hit up Sidecar Social in Addison for live band karaoke and cocktails on a Wednesday night. For a late night dessert I would take them to Sugar Factory. Definitely would go to Mexican Sugar or Vidorra for Taco Tuesday. Sky Blossom or HG supply for rooftop cocktails and appetizers. Ald last but not least the Freeman in Deep Ellum for late live band and open mic night. It’s alway great music and friendly people
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would definitely like to shoutout my very supportive and encouraging family and friends. My two closest friends Cynthia Daniels and Dr. Audrey Townsel for always motivating and inspiring me to be the best me I can possibly be. My grandmother Rosie Lewis for recognizing my talents at such a young age. The city of Dallas for welcoming me with open arms.
