We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick JOHNSON and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In the beginning it was just to have a creative outlet but as time progressed I started to think along the lines of generational wealth and having a legacy to leave my sons. I don’t want them having to do some of the things I have done in my past, also I wanted to teach and show them ownership.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We started with the idea of starting the company and didn’t have any knowledge about the music business but I have always been a business minded person so I started to learn the basics and built on my knowledge. Once I learned enough to get started I launched the company from a 2 bedroom apartment where I was residing at the time. My original artist bailed on me then came the idea of Trap Queen and things started to progress after she recorded her first mixtape. It was just myself, Trap Queen and my producer at the time. I put money into promoting her as well as the brand. Started to make custom clothes for us to promote ourselves and just kept working from there.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Kitchen and Cocktails, Yard, Turkey Leg Paradise, Pecan Lodge, and Yardbird are some of the restaurants we would visit. Definitely bar crawl in Deep Ellum. We are always open to meeting and conversing with people of all races.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to say my first artist DAB(Trap Queen). She didn’t expect to be an artist she stepped into the role after the artist I wanted to start with decided they didn’t want to be a part of the company anymore. She took it upon herself to become the first artist to represent the company.
