Meet Déraj Austin | Plant Dad/Model/Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Déraj Austin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Déraj, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Without risks, you won’t know whether if you’re great or bad at something, if something will work out or not, etc! So for me, I love taking risks; it’s equivalent to having faith. Back in 2017, I took a risk on moving to Dallas, from Mississippi. I had somewhat of a plan, but honestly, I didn’t have a strategic plan. Overall, that one risk, has gotten me to Dallas and I’ve met an abundance of dope people since I’ve been here. “Take that risk, but be smart about it!”

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Ok so here it is, it’s simple, I model and I’m a bass guitarist. Also, I just found a new love for plants, so along the way, I’m learning more about plants. I was actually signed to a model agency out in Atlanta, “Alima Industries Model Management.” I was doing that for a while, under the radar, then decided to focus more on my personal brand. But this bass guitar thing has been the challenge lol. Why, because I was self taught, and I had no idea on what I was doing 11 years ago. I stuck with it, I stuck with it, and then boom, it stuck with me. I love it, I enjoy it. I’m proud of myself for being consistent with my playing and practicing. The universe will give you what you want in return, once you put in that work. TRUST ME!!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First of all, we going to Waffle House!! Nahhhh, lol but we would have to check out Legacy West in Plano, then go to Trinity Groves. That bridge is a vibe, because Dallas has one of the best skylines in the world. So the view is indelible!! Of course, check out Deep Ellum. Lastly, we would check out The Plant Project in Uptown, and Ruibals in Farmers Market. I mean heck, I’m a plant dad, what you’d expect? Lol (They have some amazing plants.)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, I want to show gratitude to every single person that saw greatness in me, even when I didn’t see it in myself. Especially my close friends, and some family. I can’t call out people specifically, because I’d forget so many people. But those people know exactly who they are. Much love to you ALL!
