We had the good fortune of connecting with Denzell Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denzell, why did you pursue a creative career?
I love it. I remember growing up my earliest dream that I remember was being a musician. As I’ve grown the dream evolved, but I’ve always known it would involve creating. I was that kid in your class that would have earbuds in and be rapping and singing songs until you told me to shut up, and I’d still keep going. Because I knew what my dream was and no one could stop me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel that the main thing that sets me apart from others is my persistence. No matter what happens or how far behind I feel I always have that voice in my head telling me to keep moving. I am proud of my ability to push through tough times and bounce back to the confidence I need to create at a high level. It wasn’t easy for me to do that when I was younger because I had to overcome the self doubt that would sometimes make me feel inadequate or not qualified to do what I do. But with the support of my friends and fans I can find the confidence that allows me to create naturally. Now I can find happiness in the small things in life. Those keep me motivated to grow and become a better artist and person daily for myself, and them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to try different food styles like Pho District on West 7th street, or Benlenty’s Love off of University Dr. We’d need to spend time at Doc’s Records off of West 7th to get some vinyl maybe just look at the music. Maybe spend a day outside somewhere like Trinity Park or or Benbrook Lake.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out all my friends and family for seeing potential in me, even when I couldn’t. And and the creative who I’ve had the pleasure to work and develop with.
