We had the good fortune of connecting with Demarcus McGaughey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Demarcus, how do you think about risk?
For me taking a risk is being Courageous, it’s being scared but still doing it. It’s getting out of your comfort zone to have a breakthrough. When taking risks, I always ask myself “What am I willing to release, to have what I want?” In the year of 2020, I took a lot of risks, I became a “responsible and intentional Yes Man.” I am now seeing the results of those risky moments.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My friend Ulysses Williams would say “Demarcus exudes an undeniable flow and taps into his personal storehouse of magic. His work is texturally imaginative, raw and playful offering his audience a refreshing perspective. ” I am an International Visual Artist, Experienced Graphic Designer and a Life Coach focusing on Branding. I have worked with organizations and brands as Beyoncé Knowles and beverage giant Dr Pepper, I’ve been spotlighted in various publications and my art has featured in several New York galleries, Texas galleries as well as Barcelona, Spain. I’ve completed an Artist Residences with Mas el sigols (Barcelona, Spain), Nfinit Foundation Arts Residency (Brooklyn, NY), Art Crawl Harlem ( Governors Island, NY) and selected as a 2021 Artist-in-Residence at Chateau Orquevaux located in Orquevaux, France. Due to Covid my France Residency has been postponed. Currently I have art on exhibition at Msanii Hous Art Gallery (Carrollton, TX), Pencil on Paper Art Gallery (Addison, TX) and the African American Museum of Dallas ( Fair Park).
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
1. Bishop Arts District to experience a laid-back art scene. 2. Msanii Hous Art Gallery, A Black owned art gallery located in Carrollton, Texas 3. Pencil on Paper Art Gallery another Black owned Gallery located in Addison, Texas. 4. West Village to drink Mambo Taxi’s at Mi Cocina Restaurant. 5. Pappadeaux’s because that is a must 6. Nanette Lee’s House to experience Comedy, Dinner and Drinks. 7. Take a day trip to Houston just to show other parts of Texas.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have way too many people to recognize for my success and for support. My parents have always been supportive, my mom is where I get my discipline and creativity. My Dad is where I get my loyalty, fairness and optimism it’s because of him I dream. My sister has always been my motivation, she’s way more creative, powerful and urgent than me. My niece is just my world.. My cousins Leslie and Julia really support me, those two are amazing and together they are powerful beings in this world. I would have to shout out my life coach Vallori Thomas, she is who taught me how to take risks.. My investors Brian Flora, Zharmer Hardimon, Dillon Grandison and Christopher Johnson. My tribe I call 148, 161 and 179, they show me what my possibilities are and they hold me accountable for everything. I have a community called Momentum Education and I have a large community of friends and supports from all across the world. From Gallery owners like Msanii Hous, Kente Royal Gallery, Heath Gallery, Arts Gowanus, Pamela Wong, BAF Gallery, Pencil on Paper Gallery and a host of Artist friends and Curators. I honestly have a big group of people in my corner and I couldn’t have any of this success without them.
