We had the good fortune of connecting with Debs Randall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Debs, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was tired of being a disruption in the workplace and in educational institutions because of my vision impairment. I had to ask for accommodations everywhere I went, and it was always a hassle. I felt like I was always being treated differently, and it made me feel like I didn’t belong.
But then I realized that my vision impairment didn’t have to define me. I could still do anything I set my mind to, even if it meant doing things a little differently. So I decided to start my own DIY business, where people make their own candles and spa products.
I’ve always loved candles. As a child, I would light candles to pray and meditate. Even when I was upset, I would light a candle and listen to music, it always helped me to feel more centered and peaceful.
I wanted to take the passion I had for candles and create my own lane. I didn’t want to just make candles, I wanted to offer a candle-making experience and make sure people understand the significance of the candle, know what it is made of, and the many ways to use it.
I’m still in the early stages of my business, but I’m excited to see where it goes. I know that there’s a market for DIY services that I offer. I want people to create their own candles and spa products that they will love and have fun with a purpose.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Even though I was born with a congenital eye disease, I didn’t want the world to tell me what I could and could not do. I’m proud that I took a chance on myself, got out of my own way, and started my own business. I’ve had my ups and downs with connecting with sincere business owners but I’ve learned a lot from that. I am now creating a better space for my vision and connecting with people who align with me. I am learning to ask for help with the things that I don’t know or need. I am willing to trade, or barter my service or experience for things I need help with. I am open to collaborations, partnerships, sponsorships, fundraising, and volunteering in my community.
I love the fact I created the Pick Wick Pour Experience, and I look forward to the possibilities of what is to come, and learning my target audience. My ultimate goal is brick-and-mortar.
I also believe as a small business owner when you support and uplift other small business owners you create a lane of opportunity.
I do events, private parties, team building, and pop-up shops, contact us for booking information.
PLOC Shop is where you, your loved ones, family, friends, and even associates create your own candles and spa products. My holistic approach to DIY, wellness, and fun. No matter the occasion, every great moment starts with the people around you. Add great music, food, and beverages, and enjoy the extraordinary vibes. Have fun with a purpose!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My BFF being here for a week-long trip would definitely include a Sunday Funday. Sunday Funday would be a Sip and Pour, get the ladies together, and have them create their own magic. While the candles cure, sip on some mimosas, jam to some old-school music, and play some old-school games. I would check for my other small business owners to see if the have any events going on to go support.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Thank you Jaleah for your Shout Out!
There are 3 people I totally have to give a shout to. First, I’m gonna shout out Angela #1, I met her around 2015, and she was my fitness instructor. She has this energy, this go-get energy and you can just tell she doesn’t just want to settle for things. Angela J Hines is the owner of BGM (Black Girl Magic) Science of Beauty and Business. She has about 2-3 schools and an event center now. Anytime I need that true business talk, it’s her for me. I guess you can call her my business mentor. And I thank her for that.
The second person I would like to shout out is a person who’s been in my life for 38 years. My best friend, April She. She has been here for many things in my life, but when I said I was opening my business, she flew here, donated, and helped me with my first event. Thank you, April for being you.
But most of all, I wanna give the biggest shout-out to the person who make all this happen with me, my wife, Angela Randall. See, there are so many things that she does for me that people don’t understand. She is my backbone, my front bone, and my side bones. She is my operation, my transportation, she’s my shoulder. She’s my love, she’s my heart, she’s my reason. I’m in love with her and I appreciate everything she does for me and my business. Thank you Honeypunk!
