We had the good fortune of connecting with Deborah Olushina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deborah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
From the age of 21, I knew that I wanted to be a business owner. I wasn’t sure how I was going to get there, but I knew I would get there. I really had to decide what my niche was and what I enjoyed doing. I thought about this for maybe two months before taking any steps, finally realizing that I love pampering myself and setting aside days to relax and focus on self care, mental health, etc. So I decided to start a spa for those reasons. I got an LLC on a whim and just off of me wanting to take a leap of faith. That decision was the catapult to the success of my business in its early stage. From the LLC, came the EIN, the various licenses, and then the spa, which everyone knows as Body And Mind Spa LLC. It was a series of steps in the right direction towards my vision of having a global company. During the process, I was plagued by fear and doubt, but I knew it needed to be done so I didn’t give up. One thing led to another and now here we are. We’ve launched our first collection of skincare products and continue to flourish. It’s safe to say that taking the leap of faith was worthwhile.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I believe what sets us apart from others is our burning desire to serve our community and help people kick-start their skincare journey. We want people to think of us when they are going through a skin-related crisis, when they need incredible skin care products, and when they just need a self-care day. Business-wise, we‘ve come this far because of our passion, hard work, and relentlessness. It was not easy, (and it still isn’t easy), to keep persevering even when you get more no’s than yes’s. I’ve learned that good business decisions should not be made off of emotions. A business that wants to be successful must make the hardest decisions even when it doesn’t feel right. Business is definitely not for the weak because there will be a lot of setbacks along the way. I want the world to know that Body And Mind Spa is here for the long haul and our brand will be worldwide. Our brand will be heard and seen in places with influential people. You heard it here first!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love food and love expanding my palate, so I would take them to a restaurant, order takeout, or get drinks at a local bar. Recently, I’ve developed a liking towards drive-in theaters so that would be a go-to for me. There’s just something nice about being able to enjoy a movie in the comfort and privacy of your car with your significant other, friends, or family. Shopping is also therapeutic for me so shopping would be on my list of things to do. I tend to shop when I’m sad, happy, or when I just feel like spending money (because why not?)
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to everyone out there who supports Body And Mind Spa. The support gives us the motivation we need to keep moving up the ladder and keep our customers happy. Without the support of the public, it would be impossible to scale the business and grow into a multi-billion dollar company. So we do not take for granted, the support we receive from business owners, friends, and customers. Shoutout to all my supporters, we do this for you!
