We had the good fortune of connecting with Dayshawn Nellon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dayshawn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
For me, starting The Brewed Collective was about more than just coffee—it was about creating connection. After serving in the Army and transitioning back into civilian life, I realized how many meaningful moments in my life were centered around coffee. From making cups for my grandparents as a child, to reconnecting with my sister and daughter after deployments over shared coffee dates—it’s always been something that brought people together.

Working at Starbucks after getting laid off opened my eyes to the world of coffee service, and while I loved the fast pace and the craft, I felt something was missing: a deeper, more personal connection with the people I was serving. That’s when the idea sparked—what if I could create a space where people not only enjoyed a quality drink, but also felt seen, supported, and welcomed?

I wanted to bring that warmth and intention into every interaction. The Brewed Collective became my way to merge my love for service, storytelling, and community into something meaningful. It’s not just about serving coffee—it’s about using coffee as a bridge to connect with others, uplift local artists and authors, and build something that reflects heart, culture, and purpose.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Brewed Collective is a mobile coffee bar built on three core values: coffee, culture, and connection. We specialize in handcrafted lattes, teas, matcha, and cold brew, served at markets, private events, and pop-ups throughout the DFW area. But what truly sets us apart isn’t just what we serve—it’s how and why we serve. Every drink is made with intention, using high-quality, specialty ingredients—many of which are fair trade and organic—and every interaction is rooted in creating a warm, welcoming experience for our community.

What makes us different is that we bring more than just great coffee—we bring heart. From featuring local authors and artists on our cart to naming drinks after their work, we create a space where creativity is celebrated and community is at the center. We’re proud to support and uplift others while doing something we love.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy. I launched The Brewed Collective after returning home from deployment, during a time of major transition in my life. I had just reconnected with my daughter after not seeing her for two years, and our bond was rekindled over simple walks and coffee dates. That experience reminded me how powerful shared moments can be—and how coffee can serve as a bridge between people.

I also worked at Starbucks during that time and while I appreciated what I learned, I craved something more personal. I didn’t want a job—I wanted to build something real. Something that allowed me to be present, creative, and intentional with every person I served.

Through challenges, doubt, and moments where I questioned whether I could really do it—I kept going. I leaned on my faith, my family, my mentors, and most of all, my “why.” My daughter continues to be one of my biggest inspirations—she’s with me at events, keeps me on my toes, and is always cheering me on. She’s a huge part of this journey.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that success isn’t about having it all figured out—it’s about starting with what you have, staying true to who you are, and staying consistent. The Brewed Collective is more than a business—it’s my story, my passion, and a reflection of everything I believe in.

If there’s one thing I want people to know, it’s this: we’re not just serving coffee. We’re building a space for culture to be shared, for people to connect, and for stories to be told—one cup at a time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My friends all live in Texas—or if they don’t now, they have at some point—so they pretty much know my vibe, and I know theirs. So if one of them came to visit, I wouldn’t need to do the whole tourist experience. It would probably go a little something like this… lol.

The very first stop—no question—would be my mom’s house. We’re from Louisiana, and there’s nothing like that kind of home-cooked love to kick off a visit. It’s tradition, it’s comfort, and it sets the tone for the whole trip.

From there, I’d want to show her the things that reflect who I am and what I love—coffee, culture, and connection. We’d definitely hang out at a local market or pop-up, especially if I’m working an event. She’d help me run The Brewed Collective cart, meet the community, and experience the heart and hustle behind the brand. That’s part of who I am, and I love sharing it.

We’re both pretty lowkey, so the rest of the week would be all about good food, good drinks, and even better vibes. We’d hit Frisco Ramen Hakata for some seriously comforting noodles, and I’d introduce her to new flavors she might not expect—maybe some Ethiopian, Mediterranean, or Korean BBQ. I love using food to explore culture and create conversation.

We’d definitely spend time walking around Bishop Arts District—a creative, cozy part of Dallas filled with local shops, art, and great coffee. It’s a place you wander without a plan, just soaking it all in. And you already know we’re making time for Klyde Warren Park, probably renting bikes or walking trails and just living in the moment.

When it comes to nightlife, we’re keeping it fun but still on brand. One night we’re going out for karaoke at The Frisco Bar—because there’s something about singing old-school R&B at the top of your lungs that just hits right. It’s not about being good, it’s about the vibe, the laughter, and the memories.

And if we’re looking for something with a little mystery and a lot of charm, we’re sliding into Rare Books Bar, the hidden speakeasy inside J. Theodore in Frisco. You need a password to get in, and once you’re inside, it feels like a whole different world—intimate, moody, and full of perfectly crafted drinks.

Brunch? You already know we’re going to The Daiquiri Shoppe. The music, the energy, the jazz playing in the background—it’s just a vibe. Mimosas flowing, plates full of Southern flavor, and that laid-back joy you can only find when the food is good and the music is better.

Even if my friend isn’t into anime, I’d still let her peek into that part of me. Whether it’s a visit to a shop, a themed spot, or a few episodes of a favorite show, I think there’s something special about inviting someone into what lights you up—even if it’s not their usual thing.

And one thing that’s non-negotiable: every morning starts with a latte from me. Made with intention. Served with love.

We don’t need an overpacked itinerary—we just need the right energy, new memories, and time to enjoy each other’s company. That’s what my version of a “best friend trip” looks like. Coffee, culture, and connection—every single time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I want to give all glory and thanks to my Creator. Through every challenge, especially in the moments I tried to walk my own path, I’ve felt His presence. He’s never left my side, and no matter how heavy things got—I have not fallen.

I want to acknowledge the person who first gave me a peek into a world I didn’t realize I had so much joy in. That opportunity reminded me of a part of myself I had forgotten—one that finds happiness in creating, serving, and connecting with others through something as simple as a cup of coffee. Kionte Sheffield, a leader who simply showed up with grace and compassion. It wasn’t about teaching or giving instructions—it was just who he was. The way he carried himself reminded me that leadership is often about how you treat people, how you listen, and how you make others feel seen. That presence had a lasting impact on me.

Marion Small, founder of Black Enigma, LLC, a consulting company, and a published author, has been one of the most pivotal influences in my journey. As a consultant, he has done far more than offer advice—he’s been a steady hand in moments of uncertainty and a voice of clarity when I needed it most. He asks the right questions, challenges my thinking, and always shows up with intention. His belief in me has never wavered, even in moments when mine did. The impact he’s had on my growth—both as an entrepreneur and as a person—is immeasurable. I’m not just grateful for his guidance, I’m better because of it.

To my older sister, Danisha Nellon—my right hand and the quiet force behind so much of what I do. She’s my constant support system, my voice of reason, my motivator, and the one who reminds me of who I am when I start to forget. Even when she’s behind the scenes, she’s holding it all together. Her strength, loyalty, and unwavering belief in me inspire me every single day. I wouldn’t be where I am without her, and I am forever grateful for her presence in my life.

And most importantly, to my daughter, Laila Nellon. Her brilliant idea—”Mom, you like Starbucks so much, why don’t you get a job there?”—completely shifted the course of my life. But beyond that one moment, she continues to be one of my biggest reasons why. Every single day she motivates me. At the events we host, she’s right there beside me—helping, supporting, encouraging, and keeping me on my toes. She gives up her time to be part of this journey, and her belief in me means the world. Watching her grow while growing this business together is one of the greatest blessings of all.

To all of my friends and family who have spent hours listening, encouraging, and standing by me—thank you. Your love, belief, and support have helped shape my journey in ways I’ll never forget. I’m here because of every single one of you
