We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawne Cole and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dawne, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’m a bit of an extroverted introvert. Music is a comfortable, authentic way for me to communicate and express myself. I want to have a positive impact on people’s lives through my voice and music. They say that you should find something you love and make a career of it. Music is my opportunity to do that.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a gospel singer, committed to vocal ministry. My music is intentionally focused on sharing the ministry of God’s love and drawing listeners closer to Him. I also pray that people are either encouraged or sustained by my music. For me, singing is not as much about vocal inflections and octaves, but rather the opportunity to interpret lyrics and tell a story with my voice. Each time I am presented with an opportunity to grace a stage and sing, I am committed to connecting with someone, ideally everyone, in the room. No matter how large or small the venue, I’m there to deliver a message that they can feel and remember when they go home. That’s my job…that’s my gift.

I’m proud of how successful my debut release has been and how well I’ve been received as an emerging independent artist. I’m thankful for relationships I’ve been blessed to build and organic connections that were vital to my music career. It was a big leap to go from singing for people I know and in environments I was familiar with to singing on public stages, sometimes with renowned artists. I was afraid to make a mistake and there was so much I didn’t know about the industry. I had so many reasons why I didn’t “fit the mold” or would never release my music. And then one day I did! Now I know beyond the shadow of a doubt, that I’m meant to be here. The reality is that God created me with purpose and gave me a unique voice and gift to share with the world. So, worrying how I compare to others is simply not my job; my job is to sing my heart out! In tough or uncertain moments, I stick with what I know…be consistent, be smart, be accessible, be me! Treat people well and with respect, no matter what.

So, here I am, Dawne Cole. I’m not a celebrity, I’m just a woman who loves people and Jesus. If you remember anything about me, remember my name with expectation. Because any time you hear me sing, I’m coming to tell a story. And somewhere in singing that story, I’ll probably share my own. When I finish, I pray that there are tears in your eyes or a prayer or praise on your lips. I pray that your heart and/or spirit were touched when I sang and that we have built a lifelong connection through music, and the ministry and magic that music is.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love fellowship and I love to eat! On Saturday, we’d do some shopping and people watching at Legacy West before heading over to The Star to grab a bite and watch a game at Sidecar Social. Later, we’d have some fun at Grandscape (The Colony), with a mandatory stop at Immersive Gamebox. On Sunday, we’d go to church at Friendship Baptist Church of the Colony. That’s my church where traditions live on, Sunday service is fantastic, and every member reminds me of someone I grew up with. We’d round out the weekend with Brunch at Pangea or Farm to Table.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my father, who was the single most influential person in my life. His love and guidance made me who I am today. He always cherished who I was and believed in who I could be. My achievements are simply a reflection of the great man that he was and the wisdom and values that he shared with me along the way.

I’d also like to recognize my childhood Minister of Music, Lillie St. Clair, who taught me so much about music and delivering it in a meaningful way.
