We had the good fortune of connecting with David Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks is a part of the business I’m in. Whether experimenting with new sounds or going left field into a new genre completely. Risking negative reception is something we do every time we produce a new song or play a live set. The rewards however, greatly outweigh the negative. Even if it’s just one person enjoying what you’re doing it makes any risk worth it. There are instances of taking risks and inevitably failing but, that’s the business. It’s all about the recovery at that point.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a producer first and foremost, from hip hop to dubstep I’m always making something, I also love to DJ, and I co-host a dubstep-centric podcast. I’d like to think I bring a few different elements that are uniquely me. I like to take elements and inspiration from all the genres I listen to and see how they sound together. Whether it was Timbaland’s use of random sounds as instruments to sub bass-lines from early dubstep, sometimes they sound good and I want to find the sweet spot where many different elements work together harmoniously. As far as being easy, I don’t think anyones journey is easy, most of my obstacles were self inflicted so I’ve been lucky to encounter some great people along the way who helped me up when I was down. My biggest goal is to make music people enjoy. Fortunately I’ve done it a couple of times so I’ve been very lucky.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I think this depends on where they’re coming from, but, since I’m in Texas the obvious answer is tacos, of all sorts. every area of the city has a great taco spot. La Banqueta is a personal favorite. There’s a dive I like to frequent in Addison called The Quarter that has a great vibe. The Green Elephant always has a great show going on so that’s also a must.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, there are so many. From my childhood friends Jason, Mauricio and I experimenting with software and making beats when were 18, to my friend Brayn who has helped me in so many ways with this STCKY project. Most recently the support of the collective I’m in has been irrefutably one of the most important factors.
