We had the good fortune of connecting with David Dance and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always wanted to start my own business and be my own boss. After a lot of years of working for other people and consulting for large corporations, I decided it was time to solve my own problems, instead of my clients’! I also really believed that I could change the trajectory of a lot more people’s lives by being in charge and starting a business. The pandemic definitely sped up the process for me as it changed the dynamic at my previous job to working from home and less interaction with people. I also felt like if I didn’t leave now, it would just get harder and harder to leave down the road. So, I went with it.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started Forterra Pest Control with the idea that consumers wanted a different experience from their pest control providers. As an industry it was stuck in ~2005 and in a lot of ways has fallen behind the curve. With everything going online, pest control companies (for the most part) haven’t been making strides in consumer experience, which I am trying to change. It take a lot of work and money and technology development, but we’ll get there eventually!
Even my company name is about a more holistic approach to pest control. “Terra” means earth in latin, so the name of the company means “For the earth”. We are not about “destroying bugs”, where about keeping them out of your homes. Personally, we don’t mind bugs – they’re essential parts of our ecosystem. So, we use safe products and apply them only when necessary to keep bugs, where they belong – outside!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My go-to spots in the city would be: 1. Breakfast at Coppell Deli – you’ve got to try the Stubbs!
2. Head to the golf course for a round of golf
3. Lunch at Sweetgreen (it’s a chain but I love that they’ve been opening them up in Dallas)
4. Work (I can’t stop working)
5. Hang out with friends and family
6. Watch sports
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many people have played a role in my life but I’d like to give a big shout out to my dad, who always supported me and guided me. Whether it was relationship advice or career advice – he was always huge. And anytime something went wrong, it was pretty much always because I went against his advice.
