We had the good fortune of connecting with David C Justin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David C, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
In our family, we have a saying: Do what you need to do so you can do what you want to do. While it initially applied as a reminder to our children that they needed to do chores and homework before playtime, it really applies to all aspects of life. As a copywriter, I have to put in the work – the research into my craft, as well as into my clients’ industries – in order to write the copy that I want.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I never set out to become a copywriter. Very few ever do. I found my way into my career through pure luck. In the beginning, it was difficult to transition from client to client and industry to industry. Even moving from one medium to another (i.e., from website copy to blogs) was difficult. But over the years, I’ve learned how to move from one project to another with minimal downtime while honing the skill it takes to write copy that’s both engaging and persuasive. It’s a never-ending process and not a week goes by that I don’t learn something new. More difficult than learning the craft, creating my own personal brand is a challenge that I couldn’t even comprehend. Some people in the industry refer to it as your value proposition or your x-factor. It’s that intangible that differentiates you from everyone else. I spent a lot of time thinking about how would I describe myself to a complete stranger and one word kept coming up over and over again – geek. Once I embraced that, the rest was easy. I just had to be myself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I think that would depend on the friend. The Dallas area has so much to offer and caters to so many different tastes.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife, Amy, has been a constant source of support and assistance. I would not be the success I am today without her.
