We had the good fortune of connecting with Darius Bigby and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Darius, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of our brand is modeling community care in action. Often times, businesses can get lost in the transactional factors and loose proximity to the importance of humanizing the client service experience. What has helped us to be success to date is grounding ourselves of trust, relationship, and community presence.
What should our readers know about your business?
We take great pride in being Special Helpers to those who need us most, and to those who are underserved within the areas of non-medical personal assistance, mentorship and companion care, as well as our recreational programs to help older adults and youth with unique needs to live happier and healthier lives. What’s unique about our business is that in many cases when you hear and see senior and disability care support services, you think of a medical home care agency. These services are indeed essential; but who helps the “helper”- the caregiver of a loved one with special needs. That’s where we come in, to also support caregivers with daily living assistance to optimize their mental, physical and emotional wellbeing. This could look like assistance with tasks around the home- laundry, meal preparation, or just a trusted person to sit with your loved one while you take a much-needed break to get out the house. We also used sports and adaptive recreation as a means for connection and wellbeing for our youth mentorship and senior support work. All that we do is rooted in joy in the work that we get to do daily, and the families that we get to support as being a part of their village. If we were to have a message to the world regarding our brand and story, it would be to normalize asking and receiving a helping hand. If we have learned anything over the last few years of our pandemic, it would be that community care is essential for us all to thrive. To the parent and/or caregiver wearing the superhuman cape every day juggling all the things while caring for their loved ones, we’re here to be your helping hand. To the community organizations looking for support and collaborative partnerships to advance the wellbeing of youth and older adults- we’re here to help as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
What a question. Let’s start with some good food and beverages at Gloria’s- any location in Dallas. Then let’s stroll and walk off all that we indulged with a walk at Klyde Warren Park. I’d also recommend checking out some evening live music, food and sweet treats at Chocolate Secrets. My wife would say let’s go shopping in the Bishop Arts District, catch a good play at the Bishop Arts Theater and find more food at Trinity Groves.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow, there’s so many people to thank. I’d have to apologize in advance for anyone that I don’t mention. We attribute a great deal of our success to our Dallas community members such as The Sassy Silvers Dance Group – a group of older adult women who we’ve had the honor of getting to know through our Recreational Wellness programs. These group of women wrapped their arms around us and helped to make essential connections during the launch of our business. Of course, our family and village of friends locally here in Dallas, Jena Louisiana and Detroit MI.
