We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Firstly, our team is made up of entrepreneurs. We have all owned or managed businesses in the past. The ultimate goal of any business is to be profitable, but we have a chip on our shoulders and intend to use it to change the “Indy TCG” space.
We want to fix many of what we see to be the problems in startup TCGs. After falling victim to multiple failed TCG Kickstarters (some scams, some horribly ran businesses, some without true gameplay, etc.) we came together to right some wrongs and be “The Little Indy TCG That Could”.
We aren’t here for a “pump n’ dump’ or a rug pull. We are here to build a game and a community that will one day offer tournament play with substantial purses, but gameplay that will intrigue the novice all the way up to the professional. That is just the tip of the iceberg….
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets us apart is two things. We pride ourselves on transparency and gameplay. Almost every TCG startup we have been associated with has been ambiguous with finances and business plans. Many try to build a business merely selling shiny cardboard, with half naked ladies, or a hype man deluxe falsely inflating the market with no true gameplay or collectibility. We believe if you build a community that trusts you and if you build a solid game, collectibility will come. We understand that until we are a proven game with a proven consumer base we have a very large mountain to climb. We as individuals have never backed down from a challenge and as a team we won’t either!!
Our brand… our brand is based on doing things differently. From individually pre-sleeping cards before sealing packs, to not gate keeping gameplay by restricting meta cards to pop 100s or “secret ultra mega gigawatt prestigious” rares. If a low pop card becomes meta or is very strong in gameplay. We will release playable versions. You shouldn’t be limited in your ability to win a game because you can’t buy a $250 chase.
We will be introducing a gameplay like no other. We are a trading card game with tabletop tendencies. Our cards move around the battlefield (and not just to meet in a central “arena” to battle), we have D6 and D12 gameplay, and we have card types and gameplay concepts that have not been seen in mainstream TCGs to our knowledge.
It seems we learn something new every day. It also seems we face new challenges every day. We have learned that although we have chosen an unorthodox path, as long as we stay true to our core values and goal we can overcome.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Our team is scattered across the world. Doc is based on the Gulf Coast in Mobile, AL while Zack and Brian are based in Orlando.
As I am writing this (Doc) I would (and as I write this I am currently doing this) invite my friends to Dauphin Island, rent a condo, each the fresh seafood from our bountiful Gulf Coast. Although New Orleans tries to claim it, Mardi Gras in the US was started in Mobile, AL. We have the USS ALABAMA battleship and its memorial park. We have the Delta which has been shown to be more biodiverse than the Amazon.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
