We had the good fortune of connecting with Dani Adams-Barry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dani, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
“All good things come to those who wait” I have a love hate relationship with this bit of advice, but hear me out. It took a huge leap of courage to begin my business. The fear of not being enough, having doubt that no one would like my work or want me. The dread of not being enough or let alone making enough to pay the bills. All this rolled into a tiny emotional ball in my head. Had I “waited” I would not be where I am today, and met the most amazing people through my work. It was a push, one my husband gave me. I did wait, for a long time for something that never came. So when the time came that maybe I could make this my one and only passion. To create beautiful moments that would last forever. And freeze those intimate memories so families could cherish them for years to come, I too …. almost….waited. And I’m so glad I didn’t. However, I needed to, metaphorically, be shoved off the bridge though. Thank you my dear husband who full heartedly believed in me and knew I could. Without his support I would have done just what they say, just wait. And so I took the plunge. And you know what, I blossomed. It drove me to be great. It pushed me to learn more, to refine my craft, to create something magical. To pour my soul into my images and create something that I myself would want gracing my living room walls. On the contrary, to have patience is a virtue. But not to wait. No one should wait and let the world pass them by. Rather than wait, go for it. Plan for it. But do it! Otherwise, wonder everyday what would have been if you had just taken that leap.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love babies. I have always adored them. From as early as high school I volunteered in a labor and delivery unit in Glenwood Springs Colorado and have always wanted to work with babies. Fast forward to today and it’s my dream job. I’m able to create unique newborn sessions for my clients and it’s my ultimate passion. As a newborn photographer, I find my creativity is at its heightened state. My specialty is my custom newborn art pieces that I meticulously hand create after session day. Of course, I have many other adorable portraits in the final gallery. But these images are special. This is an image compiled of several images and sets I’ve created to make up a final portrait. For example, I had a client who loves whales. Therefore, I created a custom piece incorporating this theme.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, well before COVID we would have a blast. Regardless, my favorite go to spots are the Dallas Arboretum for a nice stroll and picnic. Then, lunch at Maple Landing for sure! I cannot get enough of their brisket tacos…. to die for! Other than that, I could see us hanging out by the pool, going to a few parks (we have kids) and just relaxing. Isn’t that what vaca is all about?!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh my NDDA tribe at North Dallas Doula Associates! There is such rich connection and understanding here. Being a mother is truly a gift, however, it comes with its obstacles. To have a group who understands and you can freely share, ask or just be understood is empowering as a parent. Furthermore, North Dallas Doula Associates is my backbone. Not only do I adore our community, my studio sessions are upstairs!
