We had the good fortune of connecting with Dallas Farmers Market and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dallas, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
The Dallas Farmers Market creates opportunities for local businesses to sell their products, and allows shoppers to have access to unique products, while keeping their hard-earned money in the community. When it comes to our farmers and ranchers, having access to an urban market, with a higher population density, allows them to sell more produce and/or meats at a central location. As the DFM is located in a food desert, these farmers and ranchers also benefit our community by providing fresh produce, meats, eggs, and honey that can otherwise be hard to get. Farmers Markets are an excellent example of a community coming together to benefit everyone!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Dallas Farmers Market is a hub for over 100 small businesses each week. Not only are we an important source of locally grown produce and locally raised meats, we also are a tourist destination, an educational center, a launching ground for a start up businesses, a venue for street performers and musicians, a community center for local events and family gatherings, and open seven days a week with our permanent retail and restaurant businesses. We are spinning many plates! Our commitment to providing for all parts of our community sets us apart from others. We stay true to our roots by supporting a dozen agricultural producers at our market each weekend and cultivate a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle for all of North Texas by providing for our community.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would have to humbly recommend ourselves! The Market Building holds 26 unique businesses from seafood and sushi to Indian and Mediterranean, Harvest Retail has global shopping options, and The Shed opens 27,000 sq ft to small business pop-ups on weekends. You can also come meet to our chickens in the community garden at the back of The Shed!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our market wouldn’t be possible without the hardworking farmers and ranchers who put in the hard work year round to feed us all. Just of few of the farms in the Dallas area are: Bonton Farms, Braga Farms, Yellowbird Farms, JUHA Ranch, Skye Farms, and Texas Honeybee Guild!
