We had the good fortune of connecting with Dale Volpe & Katy Rowley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dale Volpe & Katy Rowley, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We launched Fox Holt now because of a deeply rooted belief that what we purchase directly impacts our future, the future for our children… and beyond. We are ALL in a race against the environmental clock. This is how we are doing our part to slow that race. The designers/artisans we represent are part of the ever-growing, important slow fashion and lifestyle movement, creating pieces with ethical practices in mind. These practices will change our world for the better and we need that change RIGHT NOW. Our hope is to inspire people to change their shopping mindset; to invest in quality pieces that will be cherished and to look towards craftsmanship instead of mass production. We have discovered an incredible network of amazing humans who are positively impacting and changing the world. We want to grow that network and let them shine. What they are creating deserves our support, space in our homes, and to be worn on our bodies. We want to help create real change.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Fox Holt was born over two cups of coffee and an ethical dilemma. We were really just looking for a way to be better, more mindful consumers. We couldn’t find a one-stop-thoughtful-shop for ethically produced luxury items; a place to take the guesswork out of smarter purchasing, lessen our carbon footprint and still live beautifully. From those ideals, we created a platform for mindful designers, along with artisans, to come together in one place, for this important purpose: Sustain. Educate. Evolve.
We are mothers first; our goal is to leave a better world for our children. In order to do that, we want to help educate consumers about the benefits of living mindfully and hopefully inspire a movement towards thoughtful consumerism.
We actively seek out designers and artisans who source and obtain their materials in responsible ways, strongly considering their social and environmental impact. We choose our partners very carefully; the methods they employ throughout every step of the production cycle – from sourcing and manufacturing, to marketing and distribution, are of the utmost concern to us. The current designers with Fox Holt maintain close relationships with the small manufacturing spaces they employ, many family or woman owned businesses, and take extra care to ensure our clients of this. Many of our pieces are handmade to order by the designers or artisans themselves, something we not only admire, but celebrate! We are proud of these relationships and humans.
We are our customer. This Fox Holt “movement” started because we found a space lacking in the mindful market; a need for well crafted, luxurious products- the idea that we can live beautifully and still properly care of our planet and its inhabitants. It is also important to support the people who are creating with our future in mind- instead of thinking about price, think about the work that went in to your purchases; the level of craftsmanship, the hunt for truly sustainable materials, the protection of animals; and how long you will be able to utilize those purchases as a result.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Katy is from London and Dale is from NYC – only having been here for a handful of years- so hope we can answer this and not offend the real deal locals! lol
Where we would take friends to eat/drink:
We are Vibrant
Tiny Boxwoods (to eat and roam the nursery, visit the boutique.)
Sixty Vines
Doris Metropolitan
Tony’s
Nancy’s Hustle
Rosie Cannonball
Kata Robata
Hugo’s
Right now we would take them to the Van Gogh exhibit for sure.
The Butterfly center- great for children- but we are suckers for it too.
The Japanese Gardens- basically all of Hermann Park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Every organization, company, retailer and human doing their part to make a difference. Whether you are supporting fair working conditions, upcycled materials, etc. or even just making an effort to recycle a can in your home, we salute you and are grateful.
