We had the good fortune of connecting with Dalayna Marji and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dalayna, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
One piece of conventional advice I tend to disagree with is the focus on showcasing organizational achievements over the real, transformative stories within the communities we serve. In my role as the Communications Director at Vera Aqua Vera Vita, I understand the compelling power of empowered communities taking ownership of their clean water solutions, and the future of their community. This isn’t just about delivering aid; it’s about fostering sustainable change that the community members drive and manage themselves. By putting the spotlight on their achievements and resilience, we highlight the true heroes of our organization’s story — and it works! This approach not only honors their dignity and capabilities but ensures the sustainability of the projects long after our direct involvement fades. It’s about creating partnerships, not dependencies, and I think that truly sets the foundation for lasting impact.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My role as the Communications Director at Vera Aqua Vera Vita is deeply intertwined with my passion for storytelling that sparks change. What sets me apart is my commitment to shifting the narrative from what our organization accomplishes to how communities transform their own realities with the tools and knowledge we share. I’m most proud of the stories where community members become the protagonists—where they harness our support to create sustainable solutions for clean water, significantly altering their quality of life.

Getting to where I am today wasn’t a straight path. Transitioning from journalism to nonprofit communication involved steep learning curves and moments of doubt. However, overcoming these challenges was about embracing the mission fully, learning from each community encounter, and refining our message to resonate more deeply with our supporters and stakeholders.

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is the power of listening. By truly hearing the needs and successes of the communities we work with, we can better tell their stories in ways that honor their experiences and agency. This approach not only empowers them but also educates and inspires our global audience to take action.

I want the world to know that Vera Aqua Vera Vita isn’t just about providing resources; it’s about igniting a collaborative spirit of change. We are here to facilitate, empower, and witness communities as they take the lead in securing their water futures. Our brand story is rich with resilience, partnership, and hope—elements that are essential to creating a world where clean water is accessible to all.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to the Dallas Arboretum for a picnic on the gorgeous lush green lawn – we would grab coffee and maybe a slushy (depending on the heat). Then a trip to the DMA, Dallas Modern Art Museum, and after we would walk over to Klyde Warren Park for our unique pick of the food truck selection!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother has always been an inspiring role model in my life. When I was a young child, she worked in Legal Aid, defending numerous clients in critical crises. She has not only given me the vocabulary but also the example of how to stand up for what is right, even when everyone else is silent. Love you, Mom!
