We had the good fortune of connecting with Dace Kidd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dace, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My parents enrolled me in art school in my home country of Latvia when I was six years old. I qualified for an art-centric mid-school and then a prestigious art high school. I graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia and then studied Italian masters’ works at the Academy de Belle Arts, Palermo, on the island of Sicily for two years. My career was never in question. Creating art and being surrounded by it is second nature to me. It’s like breathing. I am an art addict. I knew it wouldn’t be easy to make a living creating art. My career started in Europe, and then I moved to the United States 12 years ago and had to restart my career. I instantly noticed how American marketing practices differed from those I was used to in Europe, and I had to learn a lot and adapt quickly. I was driven to make the American Dream possible and gave my best to be creative and successful at promoting my work. I received a lot of encouragement and help from friends and my new Texas community, especially from my husband, who is conveniently in the digital marketing industry.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a classically trained studio artist and accept commissions regularly. My art style is eclectic and references many different styles and movements. My environment and people I meet and work with constantly inspire me. I have expanded my creative space by creating large murals, some up to 16,000 square feet. I consider my murals to be collaborations between my clients and me. It is exhilarating to bring someone’s vision into a large-scale artwork. I enjoy painting murals because no two projects are alike, and I always learn something new. My home base is Tyler – East Texas. I started my brand Mural Artist Tx six years ago to help separate my public art and mural projects from my commission portraiture and studio paintings. Now I travel all over the state to do murals and deliver my studio artwork. My mural portfolio can be viewed at www.muralartisttx.com, and my studio artwork at www.dacekidd.com
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would go to downtown Fort Worth and Dallas. Fort Worth’s must-visit is the Kimball Art Museum and The Modern Museum, which host world-class art collections. Dinner at the Wicked Butcher inside the Sinclair Hotel and see a jazz performance afterwards at the Scat Jazz Lounge in the alley off Sundance Square, and you take an elevator down to enter the speak-easy. In Dallas, we would go to the design and arts district to gallery hop and go to DMA and the Nasher Sculpture Garden, and the Crow Collection Museum. Dallas has countless great restaurants – I enjoy Medina Morocco –a small Moroccan restaurant in Victory Park that has been amazing; they serve what they call “sexy drinks” (must-haves), which are divine. Just a couple blocks away is Billy Can Can – a fashionable saloon bar – I enjoy their bar and fare as well. We would see a show at the House of Blues or American Airlines performance center as they are just walking distance or head Uptown to some of my favorite bars – The Parliament or The Library. The Library Bar is a must on Friday evenings because one of the best local performers, “Goga,” sings everything from opera to Elvis to Lady Gaga.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would mention James Kidd, my obedient husband who owns Green Cat Consulting – he taught me marketing, good Mexican food, and quality margaritas.
