We had the good fortune of connecting with D K and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi D, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
In the early stages of my brand, I wasn’t thinking about creating a business. I wanted to make cool shit for cool people. I was on the Deep Ellum Art scene when it wasn’t over populated and so popular. I met alot of creative people and observed that no one was wearing cool local shit from the city of Dallas. I noticed people wearing merch from cities like New York and LA but never saw anybody wearing anything from Dallas so I began making my own t-shirts and hoodies and selling them at my art shows.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the hardest challenges of being an artist is finding your own creative style and distinguishing yourself from the next artist. I’m not exactly sure what sets me apart from others but I would say attention to detail, creative aesthetic and knowing what good design looks like. I don’t feel like I’ve “made it” as an artist. There is always room for improvement and I am constantly overcoming new challenges. I got to where I am today by constantly producing new work. That’s how I found my style. I’ve learned alot of lessons and overcame a multitude of challenges by adapting and learning new ways to get results.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I do most of my thuggin on the weekend, soo Friday we might hit Deep ellum because the homies always got shit poppin. We’d prolly hit a party the homie DJ anaturalhiiigh spinning at and call it a night. Saturday I would start the day off at Cane Rosso for Brunch and the best pizza in the city. Then prolly stop at 7/11 and grab some beer for the day. Then make a couple stops in the hood kickit with the homies and or fam. Pull up to Daily and look at some merch. Stop at Records in Oak Cliff and grab some BBQ. Maybe hit a free art museum in the city and go downtown n kickit with the homie DMac (coldest bartender in Dallas) and stop at a Cigar lounge. Then we would end the day at a show the Slim Gravy performing at.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I never thought I would recieve so much support. My Sister (DK) has supported me from the very beginning. She was always there behind the camera shooting look books and advising me on what I should and shouldn’t do. My Pops (BigDK) has never missed an Art Show or Pop Up. My creative homies stay supporting to this day. A few of my popular homies like DJ anaturalhiiigh, Slim Gravy and RikkiBlu been rocking with me and helping me push the brand. Last but not least the support I have had behind the scene has come from the HAHD team (TSnow & Jrock) and my fiancé (Jenelle Clement) and the brand would not be what it is today without them.
