Meet Corey White | Wood Worker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Corey White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Corey, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have spent years working for other people and other jobs. Honestly, I wouldn’t change any of it even though I knew before I even started those jobs that it wasn’t my forever job. I learned something at every job, and it expanded my mind and knowledge base. There is a saying “a jack of all trades but master of none” most people don’t know that it’s not the whole quote. The whole quote is “a jack of all trades but master of none is still better than a master of one”. I have taken what I learned from each job both good and bad to help me now.
Anyways the thought process behind starting my own business was that firstly, I always saw myself working for myself not someone else for x years till I could retire. I wanted to do something that I loved that way I never wanted to quit or retire. The second thought was that I worked my tail off for these other people who for the most part I never felt like cared that I put in extra effort. I told myself that if I am going to work this hard for people to make them money why can’t I work this hard or a little harder and be my own boss. Another reason is that I like to be in charge and give the orders rather than taking them. I tend to think I am right a lot.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Over the years my flags have changed a bit. The one thing that has stayed the same is that I do it all by hand. I started doing these flags as a part time side venture to make some extra money. I continued to fill what free time I had when I started my first business which was to raise and sell chukar as well as guide bird hunts. I truly enjoyed raising the birds and guiding the hunts but the time it required of me to be away from my wife and family wasn’t worth it for me. The relationship I had with a business partner went sour. I learned a lot from him both good and bad. At heart he was a good guy but as a business partner he was very volatile and never consistent on what he would say or do. The stress in my life wasn’t worth it, I did try to end the relationship as amicably as possible. That’s when my woodworking business started to take off as well as I decided to put more time and effort into the business. Things haven’t been easy, but I don’t regret anything for one second. I love the fact that I have so much room to grow my business and make bigger and greater things. I look forward to the time where I can actually afford a couple employees. In the meantime, my kids get to see me everyday and I get to be home with my wife every night, I love what I do, and I get to share what I do with the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly most everything we would do would be staying on our property or nearby. I would start by getting some ribs, brisket, and chicken to throw on the smoker k. Then of course there is the lake to go fishing every day or hunting on the property then bonfire and beer at night. Most of my friends and myself are simple people with simple pleasures so give us some beer or a bottle of bourbon, a bonfire and a clear night and we are happy campers.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It may sound cliche, but my family is who has given me the support to do what I do. My mother gives me great mentorship and is the wall I bounce a lot of my business decisions against. My father gave me my work ethic growing up and taught me how to finish a job no matter what. My grandfather introduced me to woodworking and started me on my path, I just didn’t know it at the time. He also taught me what a man’s word and handshake mean. My wife is my support system and business partner, none of this is possible without her. My kids are my inspiration, they get to see me do something I love every day and their joy drives me. Lastly, but most importantly, God for without him nothing has meaning, or purpose and it is he who made me who I am today.
