We had the good fortune of connecting with Cindy Thurk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cindy, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
This could not be a more perfect question for this stage of my life! As I type this I have a 2 month old son snuggled at my chest. As a business owner who has an incredible passion for planning weddings and events, building a team and constantly trying to see how we can grow; it was hard to imagine stepping away from the business. When I started CM Promotions, I was working 12 plus hour days, taking on every wedding and event myself and never asked for help.

Fast forward two months I can’t imagine trying to juggle a newborn while keeping up with inquires, emails and all the day to day operations. I feel extremely blessed to have an amazing team and being a women owned business, babies, marriages and life transitions will happen for us all. I want our clients to know they are a priority in our lives, but we also have other priorities. My son, for example, is taking up a lot of my time and brain capacity right now. I wouldn’t have it any other way but I think being honest and upfront with our couples and clients has made a tremendous difference. Work life balance is hard and I personally feel it is more like blending the two together. Working when he naps or leaving the house when my husband gets home to get some work done at a local coffee shop has worked wonderfully for our family.

Remembering to take care of yourself is super important as well, I personally try to stay active and spend time unplugged reading a good book. Those are two things that bring me peace of mind and once I have poured into myself, I will have more energy to pour into my family and business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
CM Promotions has gotten to where we are today with a lot of hard work and hustle. Part of me hates that word because I recall so clearly working 12 plus hour days, burning the midnight oil and trying to get this business off the ground. After moving to Texas from Massachusetts and deciding to launch this company; it took one full year to book our first wedding. Everyone kept telling me ‘ You just need one person to trust you.’ That couldn’t have been more true, after that first wedding, we booked another and another.

It wasn’t until about 4 years into the business that I felt I could let off the gas petal a little bit. I am in the mindset of book the business and figure it out. Weddings and Events are often booked over a year plus out so my business grew because I said yes to a lot of things that scared me. Nothing was outside our scope of work but I knew I wanted to grow and a team helped me to do that.

My favorite part is that we can do several events in one weekend and everyone is trained the same, so we are providing 5 star service to more clients/couples. We have a team goal at every wedding to hear no less than 4 times something positive from a guest. We are planners first but also play a huge customer service role and I want everyone at the wedding/event to feel welcome, valued and know whatever they need, we can help!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Denton and love the downtown area!! On my weekends off or when showing someone the city, you can find me on the rooftop of LSA or with my dog at Eastside. I love being outside and walking on the greenbelt corridor.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Brandee Gaar has been my business coach for over 2 years now and she taught me how to be a CEO and leader. Her knowledge and support has made all the difference. She taught me the importance of delegation. As the owner and founder, I need to be focused on the growth of our company. My amazing team also deserves a special shoutout as they are on the frontlines every weekend advocating, supporting and executing flawless weddings. I love them all like family!
