We had the good fortune of connecting with Christy Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My husband pitched the idea of owning a small business /side hustle. I love crafty and artsy things, so he made some suggestions, but I’ve always had a passion for baking. I came up with the idea of making bento cakes because I had yet to come across anyone who made them as bakers in Asian countries do. Both cakes and packaging are super important in getting the whole experience of receiving and enjoying a bento cake, so I wanted to be able to supply that for folks in the DFW area.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a dental hygienist during the day and a home baker at night. It’s not easy juggling both professions, but I just couldn’t let kkumacakes go since this is our baby. Throughout this journey, I’ve also met so many talented young and older professionals. Starting your own business isn’t easy. There are always risks that you need to consider, but if there is an idea or something that you love and are passionate about, I’d encourage everyone to take the chance!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Places I recommend vary since everyone has their own preferences but for the out-of-town folks, I’ve always taken them to a popular texas bbq spot, Whataburger, and also had them try blue bell ice cream at least once. I wanted them to experience some Texas staples that aren’t available elsewhere. In my free time, I like to keep up with DFW food influencers for activities and new restaurant recommendations.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe it to my husband for his constant support and to one of my close friends, Carol. She gave us our first shoutout on the DFW Grub Facebook page, and we gained a lot of exposure overnight. After that, we’ve been growing steadily through word of mouth. I’ve also met so many kind and patient people who have been around since the beginning. If it weren’t for their feedback and encouragement, I don’t think I would have been able to grow kkumacakes this much in such a short period of time! Starting a business on your own comes with lots of trial and error, but the majority of our customers have been very supportive throughout the whole process.
