Meet Christine Sotmary | CEO of Anodunos (Greek for without pain) and Acupuncturist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Christine Sotmary and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christine, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
People who are homebound and often bedridden are in no shape to navigate the community based Integrative Care that could reduce their suffering and restore their quality of life. The HHS 2019 Task Force on pain recommends our approach for people living with High Impact Pain. I am the co-leader of the US Pain Foundation’s CT/NY/NJ Support Group and have been hearing the participants’ challenges when it comes to finding and paying for Integrative Services. With my two partners, we developed a two pronged approach to getting people living with severe, ongoing pain the care they need. The first piece is to develop two Professional trainings that will act as the basis for an innovative Pain Navigator Program and the second is to do advocacy in NYS to get these services covered by insurance.
The trainings went live earlier this month and the legislation we have written is scheduled to be introduced this session in Albany,
What should our readers know about your business?
After hearing Dr. John Rosa speak at a conference in 2018 we were inspired to bring his approach back to New York. He has 17 clinics in Maryland that offer chiropractic, acupuncture, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Nutrition to people living with pain. He related what he was doing as a prevention for the overuse of opioids thereby reducing deaths from overdose. The DOD was offering a billion dollar grant to anyone who could bring integrative services to a national audience at the VA and we were included in that proposal. When that didn’t work we thought to offer teams of Integrative Providers to Community Health Centers and local Corporations but the burden of hiring in so many locations seemed daunting. We finally arrived at the idea of creating the two trainings, I myself have been an Integrative Provider trained in 8 of the modalities we now recommend so I felt uniquely qualified to write the 2 trainings having been on the inside of each modality for many years. Because the world of neurology and pain management are evolving quickly there is very little exposure to new approaches through medical, nursing and physical therapy schools. Our training is complete and complements the more formal education that most healthcare providers receive. We also educate on the tools of collaboration, active listening, whole person care and what each approach offers. We have followed exactly what the HHS Task Force Report on Pain recommends.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The US Pain Foundation deserves credit for supporting us at Anodunos and for providing services, resources, trainings and advocacy throughout the entire United States. Thousands of people living with severe pain have found comfort, tools and support from the USPF and most importantly a sense of community that understands and experiences similar challenges. All the resources are offered free of charge and are accessible online regardless of geographical location.
