We had the good fortune of connecting with Charles Schechner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charles, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for my business was actually a culmination of several things over a long period of time in my life. Back in the early 1980’s when I was in junior high, I was hungry like most growing teens are. I decided to do a little tinkering in the kitchen and make salsa from scratch for a snack. Over the years, I continued making the salsa for myself and immediate family. I was actually pretty proud of the recipe. Around 2017 I made salsa for a family gathering with extended family. It was such a hit, people recommended that I sell it. Even before starting my business, I had acquired the nickname “Weirdo Beardo”. I thought what better name to call my salsa business. And that’s how Weirdo Beardo Salsa was born!

What should our readers know about your business?
I believe I’ve always had an entrepreneur mindset. When I was a kid I did the lemonade stand thing and in junior high I mowed lawns for money. What I think really instilled my interest to be in business for myself was also being around the right kind of influences. I grew up helping and working in my grandparents bookstore. I later worked as a retail manager for a business owner in the 1990’s. Also I worked with successful leaders in a direct marketing business which helped me develop further the skills I needed. Over the years I’ve grown to appreciate enjoy the freedoms of working and building projects and organizations for myself. It’s almost always been the importance of having that freedom; more important than the money. And now I’ve spent the last few years building equity for my business. Providing a product that’s valuable to customers and over time developing and marketing it to be profitable too is truly a dream come true.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly I would have to say one of my favorite spots locally is the Farmer’s Market on the Plaza at Glade Parks in Euless, Texas. It’s where I spend my Saturdays sharing my business local customers. All the amazing local food artisans and farmers are amazing and have so much to offer. And the community of people who come out are great. Within Glade Parks there are so many phenomenal restaurants, retails shops as well as a movie theater. Even our sons martial arts school is there and we tend to visit Glade Parks 5 or 6 times a week. Literally our home away from home. It provides us with so much.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Specifically I’d like to give a Shoutout to my wife Michelle Schechner, who has always been a supporter, inspiration and huge value to my endeavors in my business.
