We had the good fortune of connecting with Chanita Mills and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chanita, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I want the freedom to do what I love and to be able to have time to spend with the people I love, my children. I like the idea of setting my own schedule.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a cake artist and baker. I have taken classes both in person and online as well as attended YouTube university (lol) to perfect my skills. I have experienced many highlights and hiccups along the way. My number one goal in my business is to keep customer satisfaction at the forefront. I believe good quality customer service sets any business apart. I also strive to produce high quality products even when given a short notice. I’ve had many satisfied last minute customers that appreciated me taking the time to make their occasion special on such short notice. I’ve put this in the forefront as well because as a mom I understand how time can catch you sometimes. So I know there are times when people need a beautiful cake but things happen and even when planned they end up still needing you order last minute. That’s where I come in to save the day if and whenever possible.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely hit up a few different places. For breakfast/brunch we’d go to Dame’s chicken and waffles on day one and Another Broken Egg on Day two. We’d make a stop at the museums in downtown Raleigh because I’ve spent a lot of time there with my kids and love it. We’d also spend a day hanging out in North Hills, shopping dining and enjoying entrainment spots like King’s bowling alley. We’d spend at least one night hopping from Fayetteville street to Glenwood Avenue enjoying some of the night life. To finish up our night time festivities we’d enjoy a few rounds of video gaming at Boxcar. This is just the tip of the iceberg so you would need to make a second trip for sure to see even more of what North Carolina has to offer.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my mom for signing me up for the cake decorating class at Michael’s all those years ago. Also my aunt for taking the class along with my mom and I. As a result of that class I started my business back in high school and have been striving towards perfecting my skills ever since. I also want to shout out my children; Christian, Kristi, Chantel and Kai. They are and will forever be my driving force and number one motivating factors. I love them so much and want them to see through me that they can achieve anything they set their hearts out to do!
