We had the good fortune of connecting with Chad Slater and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chad, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I think having a back-up plan is not good advice. I would say have a robust Plan A as opposed to a back-up Plan B. A back up plan is similar to a pre-nup, it assumes things won’t go as plan. I am have learned and witness that when you plan accordingly and go all in there is no need for a back-up plan…just adjust.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are an MEP firm providing Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing design for the Commercial, Industrial, and Residential sectors. I always had the entrepreneurial spirit since I was in elementary. I was expose to an economics program that program that taught me about supply and demand. In middle school I would buy boxes of snickers and M&Ms in bulk and sell them at school. I had an inventory system, a marketing approach, etc. I fell in love with it. I would later spend 20 years in Power Engineering mainly in the Oil/Gas where I took note on understanding how fortune 500 companies were ran. I took and implemented good processes such as KPIs, S.M.A.R.T. goals, how to run a weekly production meeting, inspiring and empowering employees, etc. This has been a very challenging yet excited ride. The most challenging probably has been a minority in the industry I am in. I have been able to overcome skeptism in my ability to deliver by continuing to education my self in my craft and articulating robust designs and demonstrating my expertise. My clients love me! I have learned to provide services that meet needs in a caring way. People will be attracted to your honest and energy. I want the world to know that I created my own path from a very challenging beginning.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend grew up with me so I would take them to see our old neighborhood. We would go and have dinner at the finest steak restaurant in Houston, take in a ball game, and end the night at the cigar bar with some fine smokes and spirits. The goal would be to take a journey as to where we came and where we have come to.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course my family for having the patience and understanding while I attempt to build generational wealth. Professionally, I have to thank my mentor Donald Wright, a competing firm owner, who decided to delay his retirement and office with me to help me grow my business and subsequent transfer his clients to me.
