We had the good fortune of connecting with Catriece Webster and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Catriece, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My whole thought was to work for myself. It didnt matter what i did as long as I couldnt be fired or treated poorly because my race & sexuality. So I bought a step van that was used for construction purposes and sat it in my auntie’s yard for 4 yrs in Memphis Tennessee. During this time of saving I experienced so many obstacles(homelessness, ppl taking advantage of me, mother’s death, etc)til the point i thought about selling it & giving up. But, I didnt because i knew that was the only thing keeping me going was to “have my own”…… I also promised my mother I would finish it. So I worked corporate and picked up a few odd end jobs and started saving until I had enough money to finish building my truck. Once I had enough to fix it up I sent money home to get minor repairs done so I could be prepped for the road so it can make it to Dallas….. Then I went and bout all the parts piece by piece and started remodeling my foodtruck inside. I did everything I could do that was within my power to do….. the rest of the work I saved money and pd to fix like i wanted. I didnt quite know what kind of food I wanted to serve but i wanted it to be quick & easy…… Memphis is known for their wings and bbq so I decided to go with wings & fish
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I work full time for myself on my foodtruck. I played basketball at TCU & ASU……. Majored in BUSINESS MANAGEMENT. I was raised in poverty. Life isnt easy but I count my blessings and grateful for every single blessing I receive. The lesson I did learn was “its better to own than rent….. you never know what your situation would be tomorrow.” I have seen alot of restaurants & foodtrucks that had to close down due to finances & covid….. I own my truck and its pd off so I dont have rent or utilities…… I bought a foodtruck and a generator…….
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
