We had the good fortune of connecting with Candi Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Candi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In 2018, I became officially “free” from an abusive marriage. For the next year I strived to begin the healing process. The most unexpected thing helped me put my life back together and that was fashion. A simple act of putting together a dope look helped me trust myself again. It helped empower me to be bold, to show up as my authentic self and so much more. I would often sit and think if fashion had this impact on me, in this stage of my life, how many people could I help and empower through fashion? So I became a personal stylist to women who were like me, in the transitioning stage.. I styled women who were accepting new positions and wanted to show up like the boss they were. Some were dealing with weight gain and needed to feel confident styling their new body. Others were celebrating special occasions or taking trips. I was excited to be a part of their journey. While being a personal stylist, I made the decision to brand myself and share my journey through fashion as a divorced woman in her 3o’s navigating life. I wanted to empower women one outfit at a time and that’s what I did. The CandiMars brand opened up other doors for me because of my background in marketing. This lead me to launch my social media marketing company, iCanSocialYou. I wanted other business owners to understand they deserved to have a powerful social media presence. With strategy and partnership I could help them obtain their goals.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Authenticity sets me apart. I strive to show up as my true, transparent self in everything I do. Whether it’s creating fashion content, my online clothing store or my social media marketing company, I’m going to be real. That real is bold and free. This shows up in my work. From the way that I build marketing strategies, develop brand voices, to the content and copy I create. Everything I do has to feel real. It’s based on the know, like, and trust factor. I’m extremely proud to be bold enough to show up as me and I encourage my followers and my clients to do the same. Social media will have you thinking you aren’t good enough or you need to act like a certain person to be successful, but the truth is, when you start showing up as you, your tribe will come. Plus having a good social media marketing strategist like myself helps. My journey hasn’t been easy. It has been filled with doubt. The imposter syndrome. I have a tendency to be an over thinker and want things to be perfect before launching. It’s a gift and a curse. When I started my social media marketing company, I didn’t have the money to hire someone to do the graphics and build my website, so I did it myself, and then I took it down immediately and redid it again! I had to overcome perfectionism. It will hold you hostage and keep you from starting. Thankfully I had people in my corner who would hype me up and make me think my website was amazing even though I knew I would eventually hire someone. Funny story, I haven’t hired anyone yet. I actually almost decided to redo it before this interview. So you see, I still have to keep that perfectionism in check.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I will be honest with you. I just moved here in Feb of 2022 so I’m still figuring it out myself. All I know right now is Deep Ellum and it’s too hot to be outside.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely want to shoutout my tribe. They know exactly who they are. The calls, the encouragement, the ear. I appreciate you.
