We had the good fortune of connecting with Calabrea Rhodes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calabrea, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My balance has changed tremendously. I remember being younger and having more time to slack and hang out. Now I’m adulting! I’m in school for nursing, I work full time in the ICU and I’m my own boss. So it’s been hard finding a balance between work, school, self care and having a social life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My nursing career started when I was 17. I chose to take a CNA class in high school. I remember going to clinicals, going to the hospitals and seeing the nurses work. I knew it was the career for me. It changed my life when I passed and obtained my license. When I graduated I was working at any nursing home I could to gain experience. I was also 18 making bank at that age. After a couple years, I finally landed my dream job at a local hospital here in DFW. I started in the ICU at 20 years old. It was life changing. Being in the ICU has been such a humble, learning experience for me. It makes me grateful for being alive daily when I walk into work. I have enjoyed changing and saving lives while being there. The things I have seen are indescribable. From doing CPR, seeing someone take their last breath, having confused patients, and even the pandemic. COVID alone changed me and I will never forget the events that occurred here in this ICU. I had two news channel appearances as well! I felt like a hero. I also remember my first code blue like it was yesterday. The adrenaline that rushed through me knowing I saved a life is a feeling I’ll never forget. Nursing is one of the hardest careers to have. But, I have the opportunity to learn every day! The opportunity for growth also. I have a passion for patient care and making a difference. I take pride in helping my patients in their most vulnerable, unexpected moments along with their loved ones. Through all the ups and downs I wouldn’t change a thing. Even the blood to the body fluids I get on my shoes. What sets me apart from others is my integrity, professionalism, compassion and work ethic. I have also won many employee rewards at my hospital. Most of my co workers have also turned into my family. They have taught me so much! I just want to give a shoutout to my ICU unit as well for being so loving and helping me along my career.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to make a shout out to my family and friends. Without them, I wouldn’t push myself as hard as I do. They encourage me to keep going and to chase my dreams. I have such a great support system. I’m very blessed.
