We had the good fortune of connecting with Bryan Yoon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bryan, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe the very essence of photography is observation and communication. The key to success as a photographer, in my opinion, lies in one’s ability to capture the nuance of the subject and communicate.
Even if the photoshoot takes place in the same place, I shoot with a different model each time and the lighting condition is different, so I approach the m odel from various angles and try to lead a creative and dramatic result. Shooting at the new places also gives me the opportunity to take challenges and makes me excited that it will make creative works.
During the past 11 years, I have integrated a variety of styles into my photoshoots such as photojournalism, vintage, fashion, natural art, and fine art. During photoshoots, I strive to find the right angle that will give me the most creative and dramatic result. Each subject requires different lighting and a different approach which is the most challenging yet exciting part of my work. And then there is communication. The first part of communication is understanding the client’s needs and wants clearly. The most crucial part of my job is to know what my clients expect from the photoshoot and to bring ideas to the table in which can bring the results they want. Once the photoshoot is complete in the most ideal setting, style, and location based on the client’s expectation(s), how well I am able to communicate the observations I have made through the final product is what I believe will move the client’s heart. In order to achieve this, I put a lot of effort into finding the right style of presentation, which includes capturing and displaying the subject in the way the client wants and also in the way I intended as the photographer (because capturing alone does not complete the process of photography).
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Please tell us more about your art.
I love to think of my art not as just one type of style but a blend of multiple styles. I try to constantly expose myself to new things, places, and trends as much as possible to gain inspiration and apply them to my work. With our ever changing and developing world, I am able to gain new and different types of inspiration through a variety of things such as art exhibitions, films, social media, etc. However, I gain the most inspiration from the one thing that is constant and slower to change, which is nature. With nature comes an immense amount of variation when it comes to the setting with each location having its’ own definition of beauty.
We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way.
I founded White August Photography 11 years ago. With any other journey in life, it took time and hard work for me to end up where I am today. To put it in a nutshell, my journey began with fashion photography, then led into commercial photography, and then wedding & event photography. I’ve learned that the best way to overcome challenges is just to face them, persevere through them, and come out stronger. I would say having had previous experience in other realms of photography sets me apart from others, as the experience has helped broaden my style and eye as a photographer.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
As a photographer and founder of White August Photography, I consider myself to be both an artist and a businessman. It is important for me to keep developing my brand through art and through its value. However, rather than only trying to compete by price, I constantly strive to develop my brand and set myself apart from others through a unique and different type of style. Of course I consider myself to be lucky whenever I meet a client who appreciates both!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a meat lover! If my friends or family visit Dallas, I like to take them to “Pecan Lodge Dallas” to have them taste real Texas BBQ. This place is so popular that people line up. They also close for the day once they sell out. Tip: If you have enough in your party to eat 5 lbs worth of food, avoid the long wait and use their express lane!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my family. My family is the driving force in my life that leads me to work hard and strive towards success. They are my source of joy and influence for my works as a photographer. A special thanks and shout out to my family!
