We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittanie McGee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittanie, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
People usually think that you become a dog trainer because you love working with dogs… Now while that is definitely true, what people don’t realize is that in order to really be successful at this career, you have to be good with people – the dog owners. If you aren’t able to be empathetic, patient, and adaptable to each person’s situation, you’ll struggle because a dog is only as good as its owner. So as a dog trainer, you have to be a good teacher, both with the dog and the human, and I think that’s something people aren’t aware of when deciding to get into this industry.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a new dog training and boarding business in McKinney, TX. I pride myself on being very dog specific with my training approach and teaching. Every dog has their own unique personalities, insecurities, different levels of confidence, and different motivators. It’s my job to determine what makes each dog tick and how I can most efficiently and effectively teach them new behaviors and expectations per their owner’s needs. It’s also important for me that I find what tools and expectations will set the owner and dog up for success as a team. Throughout my undergrad and masters degree, I felt the urge to own my own business. I actually started my first business in the sports industry, training soccer goalkeepers. Some physical injuries had me hesitate about the long term stress it would put on my body, which is why I started shifting gears to dog training, as that was another huge passion of mine at the time. I am proud of myself for starting before I felt ready, because you never will truly feel ready to jump into uncertainty. I’m very happy I went for it, because I have been able to help many struggling dog owners and I am excited to continue this journey with others! I want others to know that my mission at McGee Dog Training is to help struggling owners live a more fulfilling life with their canine companions!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ok here’s a full day itinerary of my favorite spots when it comes to food and drinks!

Breakfast – Snooze in Addison
Mid day work and coffee – Duino Coffee Shop in McKinney
Post work happy hour – Union Bear in Plano
Dinner – Petra Mexican Restaurant in McKinney
Brewery with friends – ODD Muse in north Dallas

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My good friend and mentor, Anna Duke-Bettin, supported me and gave me the confidence to see that I had natural talent and understanding of dogs to take the leap and start up my own dog training business! Another friend of mine and colleague in the industry, Hanna Keith with Wild at Heart Canine Academy, has been a huge help in getting my business going. We love bouncing ideas and helping each other with both training and the business side of things.
