We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittani Hite and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittani, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Ethos Equity Consulting was established to shake up the status quo and offer individuals, institutions, and initiatives the opportunity to collectively excel through an anti-racist approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). We have an unwavering commitment to collective liberation and believe that sustainable, transformative change is possible. That’s why our work centers around dismantling racial and social injustice through an intersectional suite of customizable services. Our education and community engagement offerings use historical context and the lived experiences of overlooked and under-supported populations to initiate informed understandings of how oppressive discrimination hinders collective success; while our equity audits, strategic planning, and human-centered programmatic design actively disrupt systems of injustice. Partnerships with Ethos Equity provide an understanding of what bias is and how harmful behaviors, unintentional or otherwise, can marginalize specific communities. Even more so, we uncover opportunities for increased intentionality so every person feels dignified in the spaces they occupy.
What should our readers know about your business? What challenges did you face to get where you are today?
There were numerous times throughout my professional career when I had to battle my own marginalization within corporate and nonprofit spaces. So I started healing by setting the intention to trust myself and my talents more. I journaled, meditated, spent time in fellowship and solitude connecting with my truth. As the world was ablaze and our country divided, these practices were amplified. I was compelled to listen to my intuitive knowledge and hold tight to the vision that my personal and professional lives must be authentically aligned. So I stopped playing it safe. I stopped settling for situations that left me emotionally depleted and unfulfilled. I stopped forcing myself into a system that had not adequately supported me and decided to forge my own path by taking a leap of faith to become an entrepreneur and professionally advocate for authentic DEI practices with the creation of my social impact firm. As difficult as it was pre-entrepreneurship enduring the challenges of being overlooked and unappreciated, I wholeheartedly know those trials shaped me to effectively influence institutional leaders and large-scale projects interested in equitable and inclusive solutions.
Ethos Equity is set apart from other DEI consulting firms for three distinct reasons. First, as the founder and strategic director I apply my personal experiences as a Black woman to help navigate the work. However, I also acknowledge and affirm the disparate racial, social, and political perspectives of women and Black people because we are not a monolith. Next Ethos Equity meets people where they are, offering eye-opening opportunities for truth and reconciliation with candid compassion. We proudly incorporate the Es of Equity℠, our proven framework that introduces a customized and phased approach for our clients as they embark on a journey of equitable practices, policies and procedures that are sustainable. Lastly, Ethos Equity’s services are not isolated to a specific industry. We happily work with individuals, institutions, and initiatives across sectors to institute actionable strategies for success.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The best trips consist of a variety of activities so the perfect trip to Dallas would be no different. You can’t make it here without partaking in some delicious Mexican cuisine. So we’d hit up Milagros Tacos in West Dallas for the best street tacos in the city and Palapas Seafood Bar on lower Greenville for ceviche and happy hour mangonadas. Our food tour would continue by supporting a few of Dallas’ Black-owned restaurants starting with some BBQ at Terry Black’s in Deep Ellum. Then we’d get our Jamaican food fix at Elaine’s Kitchen in South Dallas or The Island Spot in Oak Cliff. To indulge in craft cocktails and mid century vibes, we’d hit up the bar at the Lounge Here in East Dallas.
To work off all the good food we’d spend an afternoon at White Rock Lake or the Katy Trail, then check out Dallas’ music scene by visiting The Balcony Club or The Granada. After moving and grooving we’d cheer on the Dallas Mavericks at the American Airlines Center. To enhance our appreciation of Dallas’ arts and cultural scene, we’d visit Fair Park for the African-American Museum, the DMA in the Arts District, and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Shopping for momentos is a must, so we’d also check out the Dallas Farmers Market and the shops in Bishop Arts and Lower Greenville.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to shout out my mom for the wisdom she shared when teaching me that “if you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything.” I am so thankful she exemplified living with intention and purpose, and instilled the importance of orienting values and actions at an early age. I also have to thank my son, Hendrix, for being my “why” and my husband for his unwavering support as I took the leap of faith to align my professional experience with my personal passions. And last but certainly not least I have to shout out my professional partners and clients, past and present, for the trust they instilled within me to guide their DEI journeys. Without you all none of this would be possible.
