We had the good fortune of connecting with Bre Ferguson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bre, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I believe that risk taking is merely an act of faith. Sometimes it’s terrifying to take a leap when you don’t know what’s on the other side or where you will land. For me, taking risks has completely changed my outlook on life. It’s allowed me to not only get out of my comfort zone but also helped me grow in ways that I didn’t think was possible. I’ve adjusted my perspective when it comes to “failures”, instead I see them as an opportunity to learn. Risk taking allowed me to move out of my hometown without knowing exactly how it was going to work out. It’s allotted me an opportunity to meet some incredible people, build new relationships, start my own podcast and changed the trajectory of my career. Having that mentality encourages me to continue to take risks. I believe that without risk, there is no reward.
Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Let It B the Podcast is something that was started in a season of uncertainty. Before I relocated to Dallas, I was a radio personality in Kansas City. Once I moved, I was using my Public Relations degree working in MarComm and not thinking about being on air again. The full circle moment happened during the pandemic. I had an idea about starting a podcast but wasn’t confident in my voice. No matter how I much I tried to ignore the idea, it wouldn’t go away so I took leap of faith and started. I believe the biggest struggle I had was believing I could do it. Building up the confidence to create something and share it with the world can be terrifying especially if you aren’t sure of yourself. What I have learned is that everything that is meant for you will find its way to you no matter what. Do it afraid, do it without having all the answers, do it alone if you have to but don’t let fear keep you bound. Do it anyway!
What sets me apart with my podcast is that it’s not just about me. I use my platform to inspire others, share testimony and amplify the voices of those who are making the world around them greater. I also see it as a form of ministry as I share the way God works through us. What I am most proud of is the fact that I took a leap of faith and moved to Dallas not knowing what the outcome would be. I’m also proud of the fact that I didn’t let fear stop me from taking the first step with starting the podcast because now it’s blessing so many people in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
The only way I have been able to make it to where I am outside of having faith in Christ is through the encouragement and support of those around me. Having community encouraged me to keep going in spite of my fears and insecurities. Has it been easy? Absolutely not! Have I battled with my confidence? All the time. It’s challenging to navigate everything that comes with life while building a business/brand but it’s possible. I overcome those fears and challenges through prayer, therapy, exercise and hanging out with friends and family. One of the biggest lessons I learned is that you need people. You won’t be able to get everything you need from one person so be open to others. I’ve also learned that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. Trust yourself!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ll be honest, I’m such a home body so I usually take advantage when people come and visit me to try new places. I can share some of my favorite spots in Dallas so far in no particular order. I would take them is to Cookie Society, they literally have the best cookies ever! I think Legacy West is a great place to start for food so we would stop by the Food Hall. My favorite restaurant there is Vegan Vibrationz, those nachos are everything! For a cute girls night out we would probably hit up Sixty Vines, Elephant East or The Mexican. We would have to make our way to Trinity Groves at some point on an evening to catch a view of the skyline and also the Art Park for food and vibes. I also have to add Vegan Food House to the list. Their food is incredible and I think everyone should experience it at least once.
We would have to check out the BlackLit bookstore in Farmers Branch, there’s always events happening there. I also really like Grandscape so that is on the list for food and adventures like Dallas Silk Art or The Puttery. I have been wanting to visit Bonton Farms so I would add that to the list. Ida Claire is a hidden gem so I would go there for a happy hour. Concerts and live shows are my thing and people are always visiting Dallas so I’d make room for that. I also love outdoors and exploring so we would go to Cedar Ridge early one morning to hike followed by a trip to the Dallas Farmers Market, this is probably a Saturday morning activity. Church on Sunday at Embassy City is a must then we would find a brunch spot. I mostly enjoy quiet brunches these days so I like to find hidden gems with good food like Tupelo Honey, Honey Berry or Another Broken Egg. This actually makes me feel like I need to get out more!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God has moved through so many people on my journey to success. I first have to give the credit to Him because there is no way I could do this on my own strength. I’ve encountered several people in different seasons of my journey. I would like to dedicate my shoutout to every woman that has taken me under their wing, opened up their home, shared resources and poured into me along the way.
There have also been organizations and groups that have helped me develop into the person I am. I want to give a special shoutout to Open Hands for helping me discover my voice in ministry. My church home Embassy City. I also want to give a shoutout to organizations like The Worth Shop, Loud Women Lead, BlackLit and Woman Evolve for curating opportunities to connect, grow and learn. I wish I could name out all of my family, my friends and sisters that I have made along the way. I love you all so much! Even the relationships whose seasons were temporary. I would not be this version of myself without all of the incredible people that I have encountered along the way.
