We had the good fortune of connecting with Braylon Smither and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Braylon, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Braylon: “I am showing my community what it means to be a black man in the wedding and event space in Texas. And, I am doing so as an entrepreneur and sole business owner, without the backing of a [DJ or entertainment] company. Just because I’m black doesn’t mean I can only DJ at “the club.” Kids in my community (my kids and nieces and nephews especially) are getting to see something different from what I saw growing up. You don’t have to go to the 9-to-5 job you don’t like. You can chase your dreams and be successful–I tell my kids all of the time, ‘you can be anything you want to be in this world,’ because it’s true.
People are seeing my success and cheering me on. It’s so cool to be in this era of technology, to be able to have the resources for people to follow your business and life on social media. I connect with people very different from me, all because of a post on Instagram. People come to weddings like , “Braylon! I feel like I’ve known you for years!” And it’s because they have.
I don’t know that I would’ve had this opportunity [to break stereotypes and effect change in my community] even 10 or 20 years ago. To me, it shows the growth of our country and world–that, finally, diversity is celebrated and people of all different backgrounds can share success.”
What should our readers know about your business?
Our modern approach sets us apart. From the equipment we purchase, to blending and mixing music… we strive to provide a modern, up-to-date presentation. Getting here wasn’t easy but definitely worth it! Having a natural love for the craft of DJ’ing and hosting events makes everything so much easier.
When the business presents its normal business headaches, I dive into the craft. It reminds me why I do this. I have learned to value the work that goes into creating an unforgettable vibe. Like anything you purchase, there is a difference, and when creating a brand the best feeling is being valued.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Snooze for breakfast… must get the omelettes
Love the rooftop at the Joule in Dallas for a glass of bubbly (my go-to drink)
Simply Burgers in Arlington… hole in the wall for sure, best burger in the DFW.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
