We had the good fortune of connecting with Braxton Chatman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Braxton, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I started my own business, it wasn’t so I could be an entrepreneur. It was because I wanted to solve a problem that I was seeing consistently and no one was doing anything about.
JoinOffseason was meant to be a solution to support my brothers collegiate athletic career by building tools for him to monetize his name, Image and likeness and skills, knowledge and experience. Ultimately, I just wanted to put more money in his pocket.
What should our readers know about your business?
So far the business is going very good. We are excited about the current users we have especially the athletes from the University of Texas at Arlington softball and baseball team. Our goal is not to build a ‘quit your 9 to 5’ app. We just want to build something cool that we know every user can love. We will always put our users and our product first while ensuring speed, security, and safety.
It wasn’t easy getting to this point, but it sure was fun. Every problem we faced was like a mountain to climb, but once you’re at the top, the view was very nice. After that we began conquering the next one.
The biggest lesson I learned so far is many hands make light work. Having partners who want to solve the same problems as you is such a blessing.
I want people to have fun and do what they love to do. The gift of life is too short and should never be taken for granted.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a good friend coming to visit the awesome city of Dallas, Texas. This is how I would plan the day.
First, we would go on a morning trail hike at Prayer Mountain.
Next we would visit my favorite breakfast spot: Lo-Lo’s chicken and waffles.
Then we would explore the Dallas zoo because it also includes an aquarium.
After that, we would grab lunch and eat at the Dallas botanical gardens and take some cool photos.
When the sun starts to fall, we can drive further out to colony Texas and visit Grandscape to race go-karts.
And then we would finish off the night by by going next-door to Firesidesurf to watch the pros carve up some waves while we eat one of their juicy wagu burgers and raise shot glasses of cold tequila.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Since the beginning, every single person I’ve ever met has helped me build this company to where it is today. Even the ones with bad advice was just as beneficial to learn from.
But if you really want to know, I would say my parents. They were the first investors even though I have never started a project like this before. They believed in me and supported my venture with the right amount of funds to hire my first developer. However, after the first two months all the funds were gone and the MVP was still not finished. So instead of just waiting around, I learned how to design the web pages myself using Adobe XD and Figma. When I feel confident and my work i simply paid the developers with my 9 to 5 money to bring it to life at half the cost.
This allowed me to make fast and efficient decisions in real time. Thanks to my parents, I was able to realize what I had to do in order to bring the vision to life.
