We had the good fortune of connecting with Blaire Jackson, Owner of SOS Indeed and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Blaire, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I was getting my degree from TWU, I had to walk across campus a lot from my dorm to get to my classes in the science buildings. Most of them ended late in the evening. We were, and still pretty much are, a predominantly female campus. Although we had campus police and were taught to use the buddy system, there were a good number of reported assault attempts. Even when I didn’t know them personally, I empathized with them because it could’ve been me at any time. Between the dispersedly lit pathways, perimeters of wide bushes and large buildings with plenty of ducked off corners, there were too many opportunities to be blind sighted. After graduation, I was blessed to gradually finance the start up SOS Indeed self protection. My goal was and still is to help others who find themselves in these types of stressful situations to distress-less without having to depend on someone else. Everything we offer is for prevention but it’s purpose is action oriented. From the stun guns to the handcuffs, each product has multiple functions which provides universal protection.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I can read a lot about someone when I mention my nature of business, usually starting with “so how do you protect yourself?” Truthfully, I like to enlighten other people of the different ways that they can protect themselves or someone else if it be that. We promote self defense only, just to clear that up. There aren’t too many businesses that present the idea of “self protection” as creatively as we do. Our products are multi purposeful and pretty simple, so the user gets to control how they want to carry out their action plan. They have to learn the chess moves of defense. These days, being able to defend oneself is essential. We encourage others to ensure their own safety, publicly and privately. Marketing to the public was the biggest challenge for me. I’m not as extroverted as I once was a kid, so it took (and still takes) me a second to reboot the pitch. Currently, I’m the Sole Owner & Operator of SOS Indeed self protection. Those capital S’s and O’s come with some major responsibility. When I take a break, so does my business so I like to remind myself how important it is to “keep the grind active.” Our purpose of “Distress-Less” means something different to each person, from safety at the gas station to security on the graveyard shift. More people deserve the right to protect themselves and yet not feel like a menace to society. There’s a natural instinct to fight to survive that we live by when it comes to stressful situations. SOS Indeed products are right hand man’s and left hand best friends. It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have. There’s at least one more person who needs to hear that message from us.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Knowing my bestie, we won’t be caught slipping too much in the city. We’re both very laid back and reserved so we prefer those hole in the wall spots. There was something about Breakfast Brother’s catfish and grits in Arlington that I got on my birthday that sat well with my soul (Yes, B.O.B). In the summer we would go to the lake for a few of my family gatherings, reunions if you will. Nothing like family fun in the sun, country fishing and cloud wishing you know? I remember going to TCC one summer and getting introduced to this Asian Cajun restaurant called Orchid City. One of the best places I know for Thai tea and sweet potato fries. They have everything but drinks. Personally I’m not much of a drinker but we catch a frozen happy hour or two at Chuy’s on occasion. We do however like taking evening drives, like going up to Denton for some barbacoa street tacos at the little yellow house or some Crooked Crust pizza. There are some pretty cool festivals in Denton like the Arts & Jazz Festival or some poetic justice scenes like Dallas Poetry Slam. Most of the time we’re in the mood for down time and home cooking so when we get the chance to do that, we handle up with southern hospitality of course. To each his on in the city, but we prefer those hole in the wall spots.
